Late and apologies.  The combination of an anniversary, a sick wife, and an empty wallet makes for a tough combination.  We made it through, but there are regrets that we could not be more festive.  But we are here and we are together, and that is worth quite a lot.

The Old Testament passage was Proverbs 17 and 18

Proverbs 17

Proverbs 18

Today's Readings and Stuff --- Friday, 09 September 2016

Long day, started early.  Had to be up to make it to a doctor appointment, mine for once.  A 24-mile drive one way.  Dear Wife had planned to accompany me, but was simply not up to it, so I went alone.  Story of my life, apparently.  Did The Thing, was pronounced alive.  Go back in six months.  Up until two years ago, I had very very rarely gone to see a physician of any kind, not since I was barely out of high school.  Now they have me on some blood pressure meds and something for the cholesterol, and warnings about the sugar level.  The meds require periodic monitoring, which I guess makes some sense.  So, go back in March or so.
Went there via a series of connected freeways.  A bit more distance, but it avoids the wretchedly arranged traffic signals that plague the area.  Came back another way,surprisingly little difference in distance (about 2 miles, 22 rather than 24).  Bad roads, much of it.  And through a dystopian landscape.  This area used to be -- 30 years or so ago - a busy bustling heavy manufacturing area, autos, basic and finished steel, coal mining and processing, stuff like that.  Now, well, in the main the basic steel  -- meaning iron ore and such in one end, steel slabs and coils out the other -- is gone.  Some re-melt of scrap steel into strips and pipe and such, and some fabrication work.  The auto assembly is still there, but the component makers are largely gone.  The coal mines are gone.  The result has been mile after mile after mile, of abandoned factories, closed businesses large and small (except for the taverns, carry-out beer joints that sell lottery tickets, a private prison, and some drug rehab and halfway houses), and weed-choked fields where houses, schools, and churches used to be.  Miles and miles and miles of broken-down houses and broken-down people who have lost everything, beginning with lost hopes, broken lives and dreams.  Drug use, including heroin, supplements the alcoholism.
That's what I drove past.
I believe that we are all here for a reason, including me.  I don't yet know what the Lord wants of me, not really.  But what I saw and know bothers me, and I believe it bothers Him even more so.

Proverbs 16

Today's Readings and "Stuff" -- Wednesday, 07 September 2016

Dear Wife just went Next Door in order to "watch" the Beloved Great-Niece as mom goes off to work.  We've been told, as niece has been told, that she'll finally have a consistent work schedule.  That's not been the case since she went back to work after having the child: they've sent her a schedule around 6 p.m. Sundays, which sometimes (quite often) had her being there at 07:00 Mondays.  Often.  Meaning, of course, that Wife needed to be up early and over there around 06:45 (he doesn't need to leave until around 07:15 for an 07:30 start).  So this is better.

Wife took her weekly Humira shot Monday, so yesterday had her feeling the effects of it.  It's been nearly a miracle drug for her (I said "nearly") but it has side effects like any other and it has to be powerful, so it has some collateral effects.  Partly from its own effects, but also in conjunction with all the other meds she must take in order to stay alive one more day.  Every day is a challenge for us.

And we live in a world that is strange to me.  I see that places like the Phillipines have become drug centers.  Not so much for the use of the people there, but they're making methamphetamine for sale into China of all places, and the import and sales are being run by high-ranking Chinese officials or those connected to them.  It's an "open secret" that the ChiComs would love to invade and take over the Phillipines (and Japan as well), and have the military power to do so.  Could happen, people.  Of course, the ChiComs also have their eyes on portions of Siberia.  Lots of minerals, etc. there.   Russia occupies around 1/6 of the earth's land area, but much of it is sparsely inhabited, and the downward spiral of birth rates among ethnic Russians has to be giving onlookers some thought.  Scary for the Russians, they have a whole lot of internal problems, and some very restive ethnic groups both within and adjacent to the border, many with centuries of built-up resentment towards the ethnic Russians.  The "-stans" for example, like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, etc., many of which were ruled with an iron fist during the Soviet Union era, are prominent there, and others like Georgia as well.  (Though Stalin was Georgian, not Russian, from Gori, Georgia).
And there are other oddities as well.  I see, courtesy of the Drudge Report, that one matter that may become a "thing" is sex with robots.  I find it difficult to reconcile that with being beneficial to anyone, but it certainly is getting some notice.  And, lest one think  otherwise, not "just" robots that have female components.  Male ones as well, in part for human females I gather, and possibly for genetic males with weird dispositions.  This is progress?
What looks much like a car bomb, operated by Muslims (of course) has been apprehended right next to the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris.  Probably won't be much mentioned by the US mass media, mustn't feed "Islamophobia" after all.

Things I might never have known .....
I am -- or was -- an engineer by trade.  A lot of the jokes about geeky engineers and nerdy people in general are often just that, jokes and teasing and a lot of that.  Some 30+ years ago, I was working at an operation of General Motors, an operation that got dragged into the mess that is Delphi now, in an engineering department.  Some of those, and I include several of the (few) women there, seemed to be determined to undo the teasing they'd undergone when younger, with interest.  So more than a few of them indulged in heavy use  of alcohol (if there were drugs of any kind involved, I never saw signs of it and I knew very well the signs) and sexual encounters of all sorts, often in the parking lots (and restrooms) of various clubs and bars.  I could write several books on the subject, and never stray from actual cases.
But anyway, some of the jokes about we engineers are a bit inaccurate.  But some of the jokes are accurate.   Fashion sense being one of them.  Now, I am admittedly an extreme case.  Much of my extended family is either Amish or from a variety of conservative spectrum Mennonite or related groups.  Fashion sense is definitely NOT a part of the culture, though some do get quite exercised in distinctions about size, shape, and sometimes even color of the head "covering", the "kepp" that many of the women did and still do wear.  But hemlines and "decolletage" are not subject to revision.  At all.  And men's attire is even less variable.
But Dear Wife, like daughters, has some sense of style propriety.  Part of which is the proper attire in that period between Memorial Day and Labor Day.  One is supposed to wear white (or near to it) during that time.  And ONLY during that time.  After Labor Day, the white goes in the storage and the black, or at least dark and subdued tones, are required.  So I've been wearing a white shirt and white pants to church services, which is about the only somewhat formal gatherings I get to.  Fine with me, but it makes no sense.  And, other than the few and dwindling pairs of blue jeans I own, most of my pants are khaki, meaning both type and color.  A few dark tan  or dark green, and a few black.  That's it, and ALL of those non-jeans are what I was using for daily wear in my last few jobs.  Several of them have been with me since around 2001 or so.  A bit the worse for the experience.  But wearing the contingent of very light colors is forbidden as of yesterday, and even the light tan ones get a bit of disapproval.  Perhaps I should chuck it all and get some bib overalls.  I've seen people wear them to church!

Fortunately, she's not reading this.  Right now, at least.  By the time she does, the matter will (I hope) be stale.

Today''s Readings and Stuff -- Monday, 05 September 2016 Labor Day in the United States

Greetings to all.
Most of those who are fortunate enough to be working are enjoying a holiday today.  Others are not -- emergency personnel, nurses, and some utility workers.  And some who are employed in retail operations as disparate as gas stations, "party shops", bars, Big Box stores, and the like.

We are staying home, of course.  The niece and her family next door are off for a few days "camping" at a state park in Pennsylvania.  They left Friday and are expected back any time now.  By all reports, they're having fun and their daughter, now 3-1/2, is enjoying it all.
They took the dog, which is nice: means I didn't have to go next door, let him out, put him in, give him food and water, and keep him from disturbing everyone within a half mile radius with his barking.  He and the dog the neighbor on the other side of us seem to have a contest going, as well as the dogs on the street behind us.  And several more in a half mile radius.  Gets loud and aggravating.  I'm not a dog lover anyway, and this only confirms my attitude towards the entire species.  Your mileage may vary.

That is somewhat light-hearted.  What is not, is the family two blocks away who just lost everything in a fire a few days ago.  We took a ride past, they had four departments there on mutual aid.  Pretty well destroyed the house and contents.  No one was hurt, but long-treasured mementos of deceased relatives, birth certificates, clothing of all kinds, everything.
Such things are, unfortunately, not unknown around the time of holidays: the urge to grill  out sometimes leads to fiery accidents.  I have reason to know as a result of a number of years that I put in working with insurance adjusters as a private investigator.  Smelled burnt stuff, including burned people and pets, far too often.  Don't miss that life one bit.

Dear Wife had long planned to attend an annual event held in the small sparsely-settled community she grew  up in,  located about 45 minutes from here.  But last night she decided that she was not up to it, and passed the word that we wouldn't be there.
The county fair in the county south of here that I spent most of my formative years in, concluded today as well.  I didn't go.  Again:  haven't been at it in more than 40 years.  And the fair held in the small town that was next to ours, one we ALWAYS attended when I was a kid, kicks off Wednesday, runs through Saturday I believe.  I went last year, meeting with two of my former high school classmates, which was nice.  Not great, but very nice and enjoyed.  Again, with Wife not up to much and our finances stretched pretty tight, not much of that going.  This Saturday is  our 28th wedding anniversary.  I still haven't found anything to get for her, wish I could.

The New Testament reading is verses 21-40 of chapter 14 in 1st Corinthians.
This contains some verses that are, to understate the matter, very controversial in today's world, and in churches in general..  The forbidding of women in certain roles and activities.  Controversial, and contentious.  

I Corinthians 14:21-40

21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. 22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. 23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? 24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: 25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. 26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Today's Readings and Stuff -- Sunday, 04 September 2016

I note that in just one week, it will be the 15th anniversary of the Moslem attack on America that we call "9/11".  One week.  Fifteen  years.  Some things we go through become part of our world, affecting how we look at things and how we mark the before and after.  That is certainly one of them.  And this year, our calendar's rendering of 11 September also corresponds with an annual observance of the Moslems as dated by their lunar calendars.  Could be "interesting"

And today I was again the morning Bible study leader at the church. I only hope they get something out of it.  Leading these things is something I've done pretty consistently for the last 20-some years in four states now.  Perhaps that's part of the Lord's plan.  So be it.

And tomorrow is Labor Day.  I don't work for a paycheck any more.  I admit to missing that part of my life.  Others have a different take on things.

Proverbs 5

Proverbs 6

The evening reading from the New Testament is verses 1-20 from 1st Corinthians chapter 14
This also gets into contention in some churches today.  Consider the term "prophecy" or "prophesy".  Does it necessarily mean "foretelling"?  Not necessarily.  Does it mean "direct revelation from the Lord", as some would have it?  Not necessarily.  It may mean "God-given insight", which is how I take it.  The fortelling is, I believe, no longer found.  And the "direct revelation" that, in all too many cases, contradicts the Bible, I also do not support.  Insight, yes,  I can and do support it.


I Corinthians 14:1-20

1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. 6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? 7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? 9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. 11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me. 12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. 13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? 17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: 19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. 20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
