Today's Readings and Stuff -- Wednesday, 01 November 2017

Well, we've made it into Novem-brrrr.  NOT my favorite time of the year.
And we have S N O W, that filthy 4-letter word, in today's forecast.  I haven't seen any, yet, but it's ugly enough outside that it wouldn't surprise me.  The weather radar earlier today showed a "mix" of snow and real cold rain hitting the area for much of the day.  I hate this stuff.   And, yes, some people love it, and the Hand on the controls isn't mine.  And won't be. 
Wife is exhausted after yesterday.  She had two kids -- the great-niece and great-nephew -- yesterday and niece's house next door.  7 - 3:30.  And, then, we had the annual "Trick - or - Treat" thing, so we set up a little table in the drive, opened the tailgate on our ancient vehicle, and sat in the opening as the scary monsters came by.  We'd been volunteered to hand out for us and for niece & husband, as they took the Little Ones around.  So we were doing that from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m., and then had to pack the few remains of the goodies away, and come home.  Neither of us had eaten since around 06:30, which doesn't bother me, but it's not good for her.
So we defrosted and heated up some home made vegetable beef soup made several weeks ago, with some el-cheapo saltines, and ate, finally.  And then, crashed like plane wrecks.  Little Cat woke us around 05:00 and I rose, put her out of the room, and slept some more.
She's up and in the chair after having had both a late breakfast and a late lunch.  Two blankets and an orange cat which serves as a heating pad on her, and trying to recuperate.

And, of course, the news is full of the accounts and comments, etc., on the Moslem terror attack in New York City yesterday.  With all of the usual obfuscation by the usual suspects, the Lie-berals, the Fake Stream Media (CNN, NBC. CBS, MSNBC, HLN, ABC, the NY Times chain (like the Boston Globe), the McClatchy chain (like USA Today), the Washington Post chain, and all the rest.  Blaming everyone and everything, of course, other than the persons and policies that permit and encourage such atrocities.   And the bi-partisan treason that enabled it.  Such as, for example, the "Diversity Visa lottery" idiocy, pushed into being by NY Senator (then a Representative) Charles Schumer (that I have nicknamed "Scheisskopf", which fits) and hastened and approved by George Herbert Walker Bush.  This paticular Moslem heathen killer hails from Uzbekistan.  Yes, one of the "-stans", not from Yemen or Syria or Iran.  Many people are not familiar with the Uzbeks, I know of them, but actually know none, which seems like a rarity some times.  Anyway, for those interested,  you can see the place on a map at this link.  It's on the old "Silk Road" that led from China to the Middle East and the Mediterranean.  You may be familiar with the names of some of the cities, such as Samarkand and Tashkent.
But the "enlightened" and "tolerant" and "superior" types, ever bowing to the false god of "Diversity!", ensured the entry of this louse (and the 23 others that he was able to bring in, courtesy of his ill-gotten "green card" and the silliness of "chain migration"), and probably many more like him.  To the detriment of the citizens of this land.  And, of course any attempts to choke off further entries will certainly be met with horrified cries by all the usual suspects, including those in supposedly Christian agencies.  I've not yet heard from my contacts in some of them, and even my government contacts, those still around, are being very quiet.  Which may mean something, or it may not.
This isn't over yet, and it will get worse.
You may find it instructive to check on the very latest world-wide casualty list from the Moslem devil-worshiping heathens.  Here's a link.  As of this minute, they're showing a count of 32,028 attacks world-wide since 9/11.  Now, for reference, that doesn't of course include the 400,000,000 or so Hindus that were murdered just in the region of India beginning shortly after Mohammad trundled off to Hell and only ending (or slowing down) with the British occupation of India and Pakistan.  Or other such cases in the 1400 year string of appalling evil.  Now we hear, or at least I do, from some "tolerant" types, including one guy I've known for more than 50 years, AND his kids, about how we should have "pulpit-sharing" and "common cause" and "find common ground" with the adherents of this doctrine of demons.  Never!



We know, of course, that no matter what, the Lord is aware of what is going on, knew a million years or so ago what the situation would be.  And is allowing it for His purposes.   I know that He is not blind to the suffering.  And, as we have been seeing the Scripture studies, has often used evil nations and evil cults, to accomplish His purposes.  Remember that Jesus was born into a nation occupied by their enemies.  So we must resist the temptation to despair. just as we must resist the temptations to get "tolerant" of great evil.  Remember that at one time, it was pretty common in ancient Israel and Judah, for those hedging their bets to offer sacrifices and burn offerings to Ba'al, Asherah, Dagon, etc., and then, ON THE SAME DAY, go into Jerusalem to the Temple there, and offer likewise to the true Lord.  The Lord was not pleased, and that sort of this was among the causes that He lifted His hand of protection, and allowed -- perhaps encouraged -- the Assyrians, Egyptians, Babylonians, Macedonians, Romans, etec. to attack and conquer them.
Think it can't happen again??

The Old Testament reading here is chapters 31 and 32 in the book of Jeremiah.

Jeremiah 32

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar. 2 For then the king of Babylon's army besieged Jerusalem: and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah's house. 3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore dost thou prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it; 4 And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall behold his eyes; 5 And he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there shall he be until I visit him, saith the LORD: though ye fight with the Chaldeans, ye shall not prosper. 6 And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 7 Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it. 8 So Hanameel mine uncle's son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. 1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: 2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. 3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; 4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. 6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. 7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. 9 Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; 10 Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. 11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. 15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Today's Readings and Stuff -- Wednesday, 11 October 2017

Good morrow to all.
Things are a bit on edge here:  we received word through indirect means that our younger daughter, who is estranged from us, was one of the sudden evacuees from the wildfires raging through California in the Napa Valley area.  That was late yesterday afternoon, but we've had no further updates.  We know that the fires are ongoing, that there has been loss of life, as well as injuries and of course large-scale property damage.  One published report has it that some of the wineries in the area suffered loss to the aging wine, leading to rivers of the stuff in the streets. I'd suspect that the grapevines are affected as well, so the loss will take years to recover.  But  we're more concerned about the human losses, certainly with those we love at the top of the list.  So our attention is diverted towards that situation.
At the same time, we've been receiving word via various channels of people, including those we've long known, who are facing terrible issues of health, some their personal health, sometimes of other personal crises of various sorts, some of those being issues of their friends and family.  There is an awful lot of hurt going around.  Naturally enough, we pay most attention to those hurts involving us personally, with the remaining attention and concern diluted as the network extends further and further out.  As a result of the life we've led, our "network" literally extends around the world and certainly in many parts of these United States.  There is an awful lot of hurt.  Probably there always has been, but the networks that have grown up, as well as our insights, make us more aware. 
And, yes, some of the stuff going on IS getting worse and worse.  My belief is that this can not go on forever.  And if it can not go on, at some point it will stop..  Probably in a way that most of those involved and affected, can not imagine.  Will not be pretty.  One of my old beliefs is that part of our duty, the fare we pay for our ride through this life, is to leave the world better than we found it.  We've failed miserably in that.
Yes, my mood is as gray and dreary as the skies outside right now.

Our reading in the Old Testament is chapters 45, 46, and 47 of the book of Isaiah
Like the rest of Isaiah -- and most of the Bible generally -- this really needs to be "chewed over" word by word.  Definitely not light reading to be scanned quickly while en route to something we thought to be more important.  Much of Isaiah's words and concepts tie in to passages elsewhere, certainly in the New Testament but also in other parts of the Bible.  Hmmm.  Do you think that the One who inspired these passages also inspired the others?  Or that Isaiah's prophecies -- the foretelling prophecies -- might have come to pass?

Isaiah 45

1 Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut; 2 I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: 3 And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel. 4 For Jacob my servant's sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me. 5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: 6 That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. Today's Readings and Stuff -- Saturday, 17 June 2017

Counting down the very few remaining days in Spring.  Summer starts in a few days.

We'll be leaving here in a few hours to attend a memorial for yet another of Wife's friends who passed this last week.  There have been far too many of these.  Some sort of an after-the-memorial gathering at a nearby park afterwars. Dear Wife has a big tray of baked beans in the oven as our contribution to that cause.  Interestingly enough, the beans used were part of that box of food that someone in the process of moving gave us this week.  Think it is all coincidence?  You can if you wish, I have my own take on it.
These deaths, these memorial settings, are forcing some people to take a hard look at things.  Some respond by crawling a little further into the liquor bottles they've long called home.  Others are looking in other places, and some are looking Above.  Again, perhaps that gives us an opening.
Are you familiar with something the Gaithers did a few years ago, The Old Rugged Cross Made The Difference ?  It's true.

It's been quite a week otherwise.  As noted, Thursday night, as we were heading to bed, we got a few calls.  First a "heads up".  Then a "can you get over here to watch the Little One" while we head to the hospital, just in case these contractions are for real".  A few hours later, the "can you come to the hospital, and bring the Little One to meet her new little brother".  A couple hours later, taking the Little One (the 4-1/2 year old, not the newborn) home to wind down and sleep.  Wife caught a few hours.  I, responding to some basic nature, remained On Guard.  Around 11:00, nephew showed up.  We woke the daughter, came home finally.  Wife crashed in bed.  I got a good 2 hours' sleep, but that was as far as I could go and the house was getting hot.  Lay there for a while reading until Wife got up.  We moved around some, did some around-the-house chores. Finally crashed about 10:00.  Whereupon I died, until around 08:00.  Just in time to start preps for the funeral stuff.  Oh, and to put Niece's dog outside for a while to Do His Business.  I put food and water out for him also.
This is not how we'd planned the week, but sometimes things intrude.  Don't think the Deceased was planning this either.  So the world is different in some unexpected ways.

The Old Testament  passage is chapters 4, 5, and 6 of Nehemiah.
Nehemiah has been given a mission.  Like any other, it comes with some hurdles, and some opposition.  But assets as well.  And he was determined to do the Lord's will, no matter what.
Some of that opposition came from external enemies, those nations and cultures who had had centuries of warfare against the greater nation of Israel, and against the divided kingdoms of Israel and Judah.  Had to have been some old family stories handed down.  And now that enemy was being reconstituted right on their borders.

Nehemiah 4

1 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews. 2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned? 3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall. 4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity: 5 And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders. 6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work. 7 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth, 8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it. 9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them. 10 And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall. 11 And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease. 12 And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you. 13 Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows. 14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the LORD, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses. 15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work. 16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah. 17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon. 18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. Nehemiah 5

1 And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews. 2 For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live. 3 Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth. 4 There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards. 5 Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards. 6 And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words. 7 Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them. 8 And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Nehemiah 6

1 Now it came to pass when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;) 2 That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief. 3 And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you? 4 Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner. 5 Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand; 6 Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words. 7 And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together. 8 Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart. 9 For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. 10 Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee. 11 And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in. 12 And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. 13 Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me. 14 My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear. 15 So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days. 16 And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God. 17 Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them. 18 For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah. 19 Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.

Our reading in the New Testament is verses 14-47 in chapter 2 of the Acts of the Apostles.  This is how the church was built.
Remember the verse, 2nd Corinthians 3:6, ".. the Law killeth, but the Spirit giveth life" ?  It's true on its own, of course, but look at our passage.  Three thousand souls added (verse 41).  Now, in contrast, look back to the account in the Exodus when Moses brought down the tablets of the Law, and there was death to the rebellious.  How many? Three thousand.  (Exodus 32:28).  Think it's a coincidence?  I don't.

Acts 2:14-47

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Friday, 12 May 2017

Whew!!  This has been one of "those" weeks. 

She's been miserable with the lingering low-grade fever, frequent diarrhea, and several other things.  We'd neither of us slept much at all for three nights, last night included, and the alarm went off at 04:30.  We dragged out of the bed and got ready, made the  15-mile trip to the gastroenterologist's  office in a nearby town.  The original appointment was for 11:30, but they'd had cancellations and called yesterday to move the time to 07:00, with a warning to come early to sign papers, etc. etc.  So we left home around 06:10, got there about 06:35.  And sat and sat until 07:10.  Oh, and they never asked for the printed-out list of her current meds, the list they'd made sure to remind us to bring.  (I gave it to the nurse AFTER the procedure).
The upper GI went pretty well.  Some redness in the stomach, and some other places, consistent with autoimmune-induced gastritis and damage to the esophagus as well.  They do these things under a General Anesthetic, so there was a breathing tube down the throat, and electrodes stuck on the body here and there, using an adhesive she's allergic to.
But it went pretty well, and we were out of there by noon.  Came home and ate something (ground rules called for NO food after last evening around 6 p.m., so she was famished.  And then we lay down and died for a few hours, just got up and microwaved some leftovers.  They made a big point of ordering that she be sure to use the CPAP in this nap, the stuff she'd been through has a potential to have her stop breathing.  Scary!  So we crashed for about 3 hours or so.  Needed it, BAD!

And yet ....
When you go into these offices and such, you encounter some people and situations, and you get the idea that perhaps you're there for them as well.  Anyone believe in coincidences?  Not me.
For example, they stuck me in a separate waiting area while the procedure was under way.  A lady sitting there reading something, both of us ignoring the dreadful crap on the TV.  And we talked a bit, spurred by a news account of yet another case of a multiple offender drunk/impaired driver killing someone and injuring several more.  Got into some things.  Turns out she's just in despair.  She has a daughter, an only child, who just had a heroin-induced overdose.  The first responders saved her life.  Her sister has several kids, and one of them just had another heroin-induced overdose, again, fortunately her life was saved.  This time.  I was able to speak some words of encouragement and try to point her in the right direction, but of course the problem -- now at least -- is not hers, it's her daughter's problem.  And, yes, there's lots of what I call "splash".  The OD affects a whole lot of people besides the patient. Many,  How to deal with the potential death of her only child?  Not easy, and should not be.
Before that, in the "main" waiting area, Wife and I spoke with several other patients.  Two had just been diagnosed with advanced forms of cancer.  Again, we were able to speak some things, but I don't know how fertile the ground.  The one said, "I just wish God would tell me that I'm dead, so that I don't have to get up".  Her words.  I don't think she's seeing the matter quite rightly.
Lot of this stuff going on.  Lots of people around here just giving up and drinking or drugging themselves to death, seeing no hope.  Despair is as bad a killer as cancer or heart disease.

I'll try to get things back on track as much as possible.  A week from now, we go back to the same office for a more involved procedure.  Not going to be fun, not at all.

The Old Testament reading today is chapters 4 and 5 of 2nd Kings.  Things are getting worse, fast.  And will get even more so.

II Kings 4

1 Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen. 2 And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil. 3 Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbors, even empty vessels; borrow not a few. 4 And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full. 5 So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out. 6 And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed. 7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest. 8 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread. 9 And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. 10 Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither. 11 And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there. 12 And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him. 13 And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people. 14 And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old. 15 And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door. 16 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid. 17 And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life. 18 And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers. 19 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother. 20 And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. 21 And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out. 22 And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again. 23 And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well. 24 Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not thy riding for me, except I bid thee. 25 So she went and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is that Shunammite: 26 Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well: 27 And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: and the LORD hath hid it from me, and hath not told me. 28 Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me? 29 Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child. 30 And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her. 31 And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked. 32 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed. 33 He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the LORD. 34 And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm. 35 Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. 36 And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son. 37 Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out. 38 And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets. 39 And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not. 40 So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof. 41 But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot. 42 And there came a man from Baalshalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat. 43 And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof. 44 So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the LORD.

II Kings 5

1 Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honorable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valor, but he was a leper. 2 And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman's wife. 3 And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy. 4 And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maid that is of the land of Israel. 5 And the king of Syria said, Go to, go, and I will send a letter unto the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of raiment. 6 And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, Now when this letter is come unto thee, behold, I have therewith sent Naaman my servant to thee, that thou mayest recover him of his leprosy. 7 And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a man of his leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me. 8 And it was so, when Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel. 9 So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha. 10 And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean. 11 But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage. 13 And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean? 14 Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. 15 And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant. 16 But he said, As the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused. 17 And Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given to thy servant two mules' burden of earth? for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto the LORD. 18 In this thing the LORD pardon thy servant, that when my master goeth into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of Rimmon, the LORD pardon thy servant in this thing. 19 And he said unto him, Go in peace. So he departed from him a little way. 20 But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him. 21 So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well? 22 And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments. 23 And Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him. 24 And when he came to the tower, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed. 25 But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no whither. 26 And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants? 27 The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

John 4:1-30

1 When therefore the LORD knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, 2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) 3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. 4 And he must needs go through Samaria. 5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. 7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? 12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? 13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. 15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. 16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. 17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: 18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. 19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. 21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. 25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. 27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her? 28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, 29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? 30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
