Today's Reading October 13

Happy Saturday.
This morning we turn to Isaiah, chapters 50, 51, and 52.
We are leading fast into some more familiar territory, this is setting the stage, you might say. To us it may seem a history lesson, to the hearers - those who would listen - at the time of Isaiah, it must have seemed a terrifying and awful prophecy of of war and disaster and death, with an eventual rescue of a small and terrified remnant. And so it proved to be. Most people, of course, ignored Isaiah, and continued doing what seemed right in their own eyes. A familiar story.

Chapter 52

1 Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.
2 Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.
3 For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money.
4 For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.
5 Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.
6 Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.
7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

This evening's New Testament reading begins the letter to the Thessalonians, chapter 1. This is very short

Chapter 1

1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;
3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.
5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost.
7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.
9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;
10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

This a reference to the great and spreading effect of the Gospel. Those who heard became believers, and, not wishing to keep the treasure to themselves, spread the Good News all over that region. And it changed the culture, greatly. It had an effect. Too many of us have not done likewise.

Though He will punish their sin, He will not forget them, will not abandon them. Not ever.

This evening's New Testament concludes the letter to the Colossians, with chapter 4.
Paul gives some words of wisdom and instruction here, all are good.
But I am drawn to the names he lists, the people he refers to, the greetings and praise for the. These are people we do not know, outside of these letters. Most of them wrote no parts of the Bible, left no letters or books that we read. There are not paintings or statues of them, no monuments to their faithful service. Yet that faithful service, unsung, unhonored, sometimes performed at the cost of their lives, made possible what we have today. They were working for God's glory, not their own. And He was very much aware of it. I was paging through the TV channels Thursday night: we get 4 religious channels, one of which is EWTN the Roman Catholic one. I saw one of them that shall remain anonymous, but which is famous for having some of the ''big name'' TV preachers on. Many people know their names, and I am certain that some of them are godly men, sincere and good servants of the Lord. But others, well, I'm not so sure. And all of them rely on those faceless, anonymous, diligent ones, the ones whose name we don't know, working for the Lord.
This month was designated as pastor and staff Appreciation Month. It's a good idea. Don't neglect the ones who also serve without praise. The Lord knows their names too. And, if you are one of them, thank you.

Chapter 4
1 Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.
2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;
3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:
4 That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.
5 Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.
6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
7 All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord:
8 Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts;
9 With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here.

Effects of Illegal Aliens -- Oct 11

Just looked over an e-mailing from Monster.com, the internet jobs board. Saw a position that looked quite interesting, a company out of the Memphis area - very nice area - with the name of Tomson, I gather they do something or other that is entertainment related. I became quite interested

I must be foolish. I thought that this was the United States of America. And while I recognize that there are some cultural anomalies along the Texas-Mexico border, Memphis is a long way from Brownsville. I find it discouraging that Memphis, Tennessee, some thousand miles away, evidently has so many illegal aliens, and Tomson in Memphis employs so many illegal aliens, that American would-be employees are expected to be familiar with the language of the invaders.
What part of this sounds like a good thing for America?

Deport the aliens. ALL the illegals.

Today's Reading October 11

Thursday already. Where has our week gone?

Yes, He really is in charge. And He will sometimes use bad people to accomplish His intentions.

Chapter 45

1 Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;
2 I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron:
3 And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.
4 For Jacob my servant's sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me.
5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:

More on the subject of ''how shall we live?'' with an emphasis on looking through the current circumstances, and using our view of eternity and the presence of the Lord in our lives, as being our guides. And there are some ''politically incorrect'' sections here, dealing with how to order your home. Things rarely spoken of these days.

Today's Old Testament reading today is Isaiah 43 and 44
The Lord is speaking through Isaiah, speaking both of future problems, but also that He would not forget His people. Are you coming to understand the importance of Isaiah, and why he was so frequently quoted in the Gospels? He saw, because the Lord showed him.

1 Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen:
2 Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:
4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

This evening's New Testament readings is Colossians chapter 2.
Paul just keeps on teaching. His letters are not primarily sermons, evangelistic messages to the unconverted, they are primarily addressed to believers, to those who are wondering ''now what?'', and ''how shall we live now?''. There are a lot of issues that arose then, and they still arise now.

• There are a few that revolve around the idea that - and I've heard this said openly, ''yes, you've come to Christ. But there are some things that you need to do, and others that you must not do, in order that He not take your salavation away''. So we get days to fast and to feast, arguments over what day to have for worship (ever hear of the 7th Day Baptists?), arguments over dress, dancing, alcohol, movies, music in church, Bible translations, hair styles and lengths, head coverings for women (and what size), modern conveniences including automobiles and electricity, and many others.
• There are others that say, and I've heard this said openly, ''I'm saved! My salvation is secure! So now, I can drink whatever I want, smoke whatever I want, sleep with whomever I want, and live however I choose. I'm eternally secure! I don't have to read the Bible, or tithe, or attend worship, or do any of that old-fashioned repentance stuff. I'm saved!''. This is what Bonhoeffer called ''cheap grace''.

Paul starts to address some of these issues here. Not all of them, but he starts to lay out the principles.

Chapter 2

1 For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;
2 That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;
3 In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
4 And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.
5 For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.
6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
19 And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.
20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,

22 Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

Today's Reading October 9

Good morning. Dark here, 0530. Perhaps this will be a good day. I woke up at around 0400 - our two cats were busy growling at each other in the way male cats do when they're about to fight. Since one was laying along side of me and the other was on my nightstand, any such encounter would necessarily affect me. Somehow the fight was averted - temporarily one suspects. Being a peacemaker around those who have no interest in it or understanding of it is a dubious honor.

This morning's reading is Isaiah, chapters 41 and 42.
Isaiah looks forward to the coming Christ. We can not imagine how that affected him - to be in the midst of turmoil, seeing the coming One, and also having a glimpse of sin and death and slaughter in the intervening time. Hope and joy, certainly, but sorrow as well.

Chapter 42

1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.

Isaiah is quoted throughout the Gospels and it's easy to see why. He knew, and they realized that he knew, the same Lord was at work throughout.

This evening's reading from the New Testament is Paul's letter to the Colossians, chapter 1.
It is difficult to carve out a section of this, since it all hangs together very nicely, and Paul wastes no time getting down to things. You see that in him. These days, a preacher often feels the need to ''warm up'' the congregation with a few stories, jokes, whatever, ideally with a point, but sometimes not. Paul never does that, he's totally and utterly focused on the message he's been given to transmit.

9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
11 Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;
12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

This morning's reading is Isaiah 39 and 40. If you've never realized how the entire Bible, including what we call the Old Testament, points to Jesus the Christ, pay particular attention to Isaiah 40 this morning. See the references?

1 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.

This afternoon our passage is Phillipians 4, completing Phillipians. But there are some real nuggets of gold here. I will reproduce the whole passage, but pay particular attention to the sections I've highlighted, verses 4-9, 11-13, 19

Chapter 4

1 Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.
2 I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.
3 And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.

Today's Reading October 7

Good morning.
This morning's Old Testament reading is Isaiah, chapters 37 and 38
Both these chapters cover part of the life of King Hezekiah. And Hezekiah is one of those great - but not perfect - men in history. He had troubles too, don't doubt that at all. Chapter 38 covers the time when he was sick and dying, something that comes to us all.
But chapter 37 continues the account in chapter 36 of the war with the Assyrians, and the siege of Jerusalem. Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians has called upon them to surrender, to submit to his will. He has mocked the Lord and His promises. Hezekiah goes up to the Temple to pray,

5 And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying,
16 O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.
17 Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.
18 Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,
19 And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
20 Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.

And the Lord honored that request as we see down in the chapter,

36 Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.
38 And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

Ray van der Laan (OK, that 's the Dutch in me, he spells it Vanderlaan) put together a marvelous series, still in production I believe, that was originally called ''That the World May Know'', taken from his being drawn to that phrase as an important one throughout the entire Bible. I recommend the series highly, I think it's been retitled as ''Faith Lessons'', get it it's wonderful.
And, it's true, one of the reasons the Lord does certain things, one of the reasons we are called upon to do certain things, is to make it evident that He, and He alone, is Lord. Lord of the world, and Lord of our lives. I fall short there. I can't do it. But He can, and He provides the means as well. See the second part of this posting.

This evening's New Testament passage is from Phillipians, chapter 3.
Good stuff, but a couple things have been jumping out at me, perhaps it's just related to where I am right now, or perhaps they're just that good.
Paul speaks of his own journey, how he has come from the most respected elements of traditional Judaism, and contrasts it to where he is and where he is going - we're headed along that path too, by the way.

7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:
10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

We talked a while back about some of the key phrases in the Bible -- ''for God so loved....'', ''In the beginning, GOD ..'', '' but if not ...'', and so forth. Here's another one '' ... but this one thing I do ...''. Paul knows it's not all mountaintop, sometimes it's the Valley of the Shadow as well, and he deals with it by just slogging ahead, pressing on.
And then a phrase that scares me,

17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.

Are you ready and willing to have others follow you, to use your life, your words, as an example of how to glorify the Lord, how to live the life of a believer, how to resolve the issuess you face? Are you ready to have others see Jesus in you, and want it as well?
That troubles me, I know my own failings all too well. But we should be able to do this.
