Today's Readings and Stuff -- Tuesday, 08 September 2020

Yesterday went by with us looking out at hours and hours of torrential rain, here at least.  When we'd awakened, the "experts" at the local TV stations were telling us of chances of occasional light and spotty showers.  Yeah, right.  I looked at a weather radar view around noon that showed a truly large storm system that extended from central Illinois to central Pennsylvania, with an arm of it that extended to north of the PA-NY line.  And with embedded storms throughout, lots of lightning and winds.  So much for "experts".  Color me more than a bit skeptical of those who claim to be all-wise and expect the serfs and proles to bow to their wisdom.
So I'm probably going to be doing some make-up errands and tasks today to make up for it.  Next-door niece and family came back early from their camping trip.  Two adults and two kids in a small camper taking cover from the storms is probably not the experience they'd been planning.  He's got a few days off work yet, so perhaps they'll be doing some closer-to-home stuff.  Or not.
One side effect of the weather is that it's made Wife miserable.  As some people who experience various sorts of arthritis know, the bones and joints can become quite reliable barometers, and that changing weather fronts can be downright painful.  I've been spared that, so far, but she's been dealing with such for years and years, and yesterday was not a good one for her.  Perhaps today will be better

I was going to try to sneak out today or tomorrow for a bit:  our wedding anniversary is Thursday.  Didn't happen as other matters took precedence.  A trip to Vienna or England or Dollywood isn't in the budget, so the festivities will be scaled back somewhat.  Maybe a box of chocolates and a couple flowers.  But we have each other.

We had planned to make a run over to the clinic complex where our main doctor is housed, there to do some "labs" that -- particularly in her case -- are overdue, and mine are due in prep for an appointment next month.  Mine are supposed to be done "fasting" so no late nights snacks for me and wasn't expecting any breakfast either, or coffee for that matter.  But she was awake half the night and didn't wake up until after 09:00, at which time "peopling" was more than she could handle.  So, perhaps, tomorrow morning?  We'll see.

ISAIAH 17

1The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.

2The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.

3The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the Lord of hosts.

4And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean.

5And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim.

6Yet gleaning grapes shall be left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost fruitful branches thereof, saith the Lord God of Israel.

7At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.

8And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.

9In that day shall his strong cities be as a forsaken bough, and an uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel: and there shall be desolation.

10Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips:

11In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.

12Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations, that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!

13The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.

14And behold at eveningtide trouble; and before the morning he is not. This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us.

ISAIAH 18

1Woe to the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia:

2That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled!

3All ye inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth, see ye, when he lifteth up an ensign on the mountains; and when he bloweth a trumpet, hear ye.

4For so the Lord said unto me, I will take my rest, and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs, and like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.

5For afore the harvest, when the bud is perfect, and the sour grape is ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks, and take away and cut down the branches.

6They shall be left together unto the fowls of the mountains, and to the beasts of the earth: and the fowls shall summer upon them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them.

7In that time shall the present be brought unto the Lord of hosts of a people scattered and peeled, and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and trodden under foot, whose land the rivers have spoiled, to the place of the name of the Lord of hosts, the mount Zion.

PROVERBS 9

Wisdom versus Foolishness

1Wisdom has built her house; she has carved out her seven pillars.

2She has prepared her meat;  she has mixed her wine;  she has also set her table. 

3She has sent out her female servants; she calls out from the highest points of the city: 

4“Whoever is inexperienced, enter here! ” To the one who lacks sense,  she says,

5“Come, eat my bread, and drink the wine I have mixed.

6Leave inexperience behind, and you will live; pursue the way of understanding.

7The one who corrects a mocker will bring dishonor on himself; the one who rebukes a wicked man will get hurt. 

8Don’t rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you;  rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. 

9Instruct a wise man, and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man, and he will learn more. 

10“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,  and the knowledge of the Holy One  is understanding.

11For by Wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.

12If you are wise, you are wise for your own benefit; if you mock, you alone will bear the consequences.”

13The woman Folly is rowdy; she is gullible and knows nothing. 

14She sits by the doorway of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city,

15calling to those who pass by, who go straight ahead on their paths: 

16“Whoever is inexperienced, enter here! ”  To the one who lacks sense, she says,

17“Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten secretly is tasty! ” 

18But he doesn’t know that the departed spirits are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

COLOSSIANS 2

1For I want you to know how great a struggle  I have for you, for those in Laodicea,  and for all who have not seen me in person. 
2I want their hearts to be encouraged  and joined together in love, so that they may have all the riches of assured understanding and have the knowledge of God’s mystery  — Christ.   
3All the treasures of wisdom  and knowledge  are hidden in Him.

Christ versus the Colossian Heresy

4I am saying this so that no one will deceive you with persuasive arguments. 5For I may be absent in body, but I am with you in spirit,  rejoicing to see how well ordered you are and the strength of your faith in Christ.

6Therefore, as you have received  Christ Jesus the Lord,  walk in Him, 
7rooted and built up in Him  and established in the faith, just as you were taught,  overflowing with gratitude.

8Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition,  based on the elemental forces of the world, and not based on Christ.  
9For the entire fullness  of God’s nature  dwells bodily  in Christ, 
10and you have been filled by Him, who is the head  over every ruler and authority. 
11You were also circumcised in Him with a circumcision not done with hands, by putting off the body of flesh,  in the circumcision of the Messiah.   
12Having been buried with Him  in baptism, you were also raised with Him  through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.  
13And when you were dead in trespasses and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive with Him and forgave us all our trespasses. 
14He erased the certificate of debt, with its obligations, that was against us and opposed to us, and has taken it out of the way by nailing it to the cross.  
15He disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgraced them publicly; He triumphed over them by Him.  

16Therefore, don’t let anyone judge  you in regard to food and drink  or in the matter of a festival or a new moon  or a Sabbath day.  
17These are a shadow  of what was to come;  the substance is  the Messiah.  
18Let no one disqualify you,   insisting on ascetic practices  and the worship of angels, claiming access to a visionary realm and inflated  without cause by his unspiritual  mind. 
19He doesn’t hold on to the head, from whom the whole body,  nourished and held together by its ligaments and tendons, develops with growth from God.

20If you died with the Messiah  to the elemental forces of this world, why do you live as if you still belonged to the world? Why do you submit to regulations: 
21“Don’t handle, don’t taste, don’t touch”? 
22All these regulations refer to what is destroyed by being used up; they are commands and doctrines of men. 
23Although these have a reputation of wisdom  by promoting ascetic practices, humility, and severe treatment of the body, they are not of any value in curbing self-indulgence. 

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Thursday, 12 October 2017

Do I need to remind everyone that tomorrow is Friday the 13th?   There is a whole bunch of folklore around the date, and even a high-dollar (and nearly unpronounceable) name:  for it: paraskevidekatriaphobia.  And there are many who make a Big Deal over it.  I was once told that it corresponds to the death of the first-born that was the start of the Exodus in Egypt, which seems unlikely.  But there is a whole cottage industry devoted to the matter.  Whatever.
Is it just me, or do some people spend their whole lives "majoring in the minors"??

Wife is asleep right now (mid-afternoon).  She didn't sleep much last night, got up while I was totally "out of it" (which happens very very rarely) and took up residence on the recliner, which has a better angle for her breathing anyway.  She ate a bit, even got up and made a lunch, then went into the  bedroom and collapsed.  So I'm being quiet.  She has several cats surrounding her, which both she and they derive some sort of mysterious comfort from.  I've been washing clothes since I got up, the last load of the day is in the dryer now.  Amazing how much a blessing that is:  for many of my single years, living in a janitor's closet, I had to haul baskets of dirty duds to a coin-op laundromat which gets old.  Even afterwards, I had to use the coin-op machines in the apartment building (fortunately, right next to my apartment).  Tossing stuff in and coming back later to switch loads, etc. is a blessing, but one we rarely think of.  Grandmothers started with hand-powered washboards (later advancing to wringer washers as my mom had [and if you've not used one as I have, it's an adventure]) and then hung stuff out on a line.  Including in winter.  As mom did for many years.  So the farmer's overalls were used more than one day, believe me.  A real change in the world, but we rarely notice it now.  

The fires in California continue.  We've heard nothing for several days, since we were made aware that younger daughter and her husband had to be evacuated.  Nary a word since, and we are understandably concerned.

Earlier today, I had some interesting thoughts.  Which have vanished from the tip of the tongue.  Might be added later, may be gone into The Great Beyond forever.  Never know.

Our Old Testament passage is chapters 48 and 49 of Isaiah.  Isaiah had the task of standing up and saying "thus says the Lord!", often to people who were not at all happy about what he was telling them.  Some things haven't changed much, have they.

Isaiah 48

1 Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness. 2 For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; The LORD of hosts is his name. 3 I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth, and I shewed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass. 4 Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass; 5 I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them. 6 Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them. 7 They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them. 8 Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb. 9 For my name's sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off. 10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. 11 For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another. 12 Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. 13 Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together. 14 All ye, assemble yourselves, and hear; which among them hath declared these things? Isaiah 49

Our New Testament passage is chapter 4 of the epistle to the Colossians, completing it.  A short letter, relatively, but there's a lot here.  I do think that we tend to overlook how different our world is from theirs, and how much of that change is a direct result of the Christian faith.
I do like verse 2, "continue in prayer".  Before our relocation, we were members of an equally small church in the South.  I was in a deacon's meeting one afternoon, and one, "Doug", brought a prayer request from someone he knew, not a member of our gathering, requesting our congregation's prayers in particular.  I never forgot what Doug said, he said that the person had brought that request and need to us, because we were known as a praying church.  That is high praise indeed.  And, yes, EVERY church should be such.  Sadly, not many are.  That is a horrible thing to say, but sadly is true.  Yes, "continue in prayer", and I believe the Lord can use that.


Colossians 4

1 Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven. 2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; 3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: 4 That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. 5 Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. 7 All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord: 8 Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts; 9 With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. Today's Readings and Stuff -- Wednesday, 11 October 2017

Good morrow to all.
Things are a bit on edge here:  we received word through indirect means that our younger daughter, who is estranged from us, was one of the sudden evacuees from the wildfires raging through California in the Napa Valley area.  That was late yesterday afternoon, but we've had no further updates.  We know that the fires are ongoing, that there has been loss of life, as well as injuries and of course large-scale property damage.  One published report has it that some of the wineries in the area suffered loss to the aging wine, leading to rivers of the stuff in the streets. I'd suspect that the grapevines are affected as well, so the loss will take years to recover.  But  we're more concerned about the human losses, certainly with those we love at the top of the list.  So our attention is diverted towards that situation.
At the same time, we've been receiving word via various channels of people, including those we've long known, who are facing terrible issues of health, some their personal health, sometimes of other personal crises of various sorts, some of those being issues of their friends and family.  There is an awful lot of hurt going around.  Naturally enough, we pay most attention to those hurts involving us personally, with the remaining attention and concern diluted as the network extends further and further out.  As a result of the life we've led, our "network" literally extends around the world and certainly in many parts of these United States.  There is an awful lot of hurt.  Probably there always has been, but the networks that have grown up, as well as our insights, make us more aware. 
And, yes, some of the stuff going on IS getting worse and worse.  My belief is that this can not go on forever.  And if it can not go on, at some point it will stop..  Probably in a way that most of those involved and affected, can not imagine.  Will not be pretty.  One of my old beliefs is that part of our duty, the fare we pay for our ride through this life, is to leave the world better than we found it.  We've failed miserably in that.
Yes, my mood is as gray and dreary as the skies outside right now.

Our reading in the Old Testament is chapters 45, 46, and 47 of the book of Isaiah
Like the rest of Isaiah -- and most of the Bible generally -- this really needs to be "chewed over" word by word.  Definitely not light reading to be scanned quickly while en route to something we thought to be more important.  Much of Isaiah's words and concepts tie in to passages elsewhere, certainly in the New Testament but also in other parts of the Bible.  Hmmm.  Do you think that the One who inspired these passages also inspired the others?  Or that Isaiah's prophecies -- the foretelling prophecies -- might have come to pass?

Isaiah 45

1 Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut; 2 I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: 3 And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel. 4 For Jacob my servant's sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me. 5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: 6 That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. Isaiah 46

Today's Readings And Stuff -- Tuesday, 10 October 2017

Now 1/3 of the way through October, with the dreaded November coming at us, then shudder December. 
Getting at least part way back from whatever whomped me over the last several days.  Not sure what it is or was but I think it is reluctantly departing.  Call me inhospitable, but I don't intend to invite it back. 
And we have other things on our minds right now.  Most people are aware of the wildfires raging in California, the Napa area north of San Francisco.  Our younger daughter and her husband live there, in Santa Rosa.  We got word from him yesterday that they were safe and OK, which was great.  Then, late this afternoon, we got word that they'd been evacuated as their home or at least their neighborhood was about to be engulfed in the flames.  Not a word since then, so we are concerned and our attention is drawn there.  We know that there has been much damage and loss, some injuries, and some deaths.  While all these injuries, deaths, and property losses are dreadful, we can perhaps be forgiven if our attention is focused on our loved ones.

And our world continues to spin out of control.

Several songs been in mind today, including during the fitful sleep last night.
One of these is rarely heard these days.  Work For The Night Is Coming.  An oldie, one I heard frequently, ok, occasionally, as a kid.  And almost never since then.  Now, we know and believe that we are not saved by works.  But I fully believed that we are saved and commissioned to DO work for the Kingdom.  Whatever and wherever that may be.  In our day of "easy believism", that's not always a very popular concept.  Whatever.  And seeing how readily we fill our hours with stuff that simply doesn't matter is deeply convicting.
