Today's Readings and Stuff -- Tuesday, 17 September, 2013

and a Fine Morning to all who stop by.  Good to have you along.  Hope this is a good day for all.
Sitting at kitchen table, drinking coffee and eating stale donuts that I got off the clearance rack at store.  Last week.  Early last week.  Did I mention stale?  but edible, and we are thankful for them.

The Great Packing Project continues.  I can not wait for this thing to be done.  At this point, we just want to be out of here, in our new location, and this move and all the stress and everything to be over with.  Can't wait.

Then we turn to our daily readings. 
This morning, chapters 1, 2, 3 from the book of Ecclesiastes.  In some ways, this resembles Proverbs, in other ways it is quite different.  They are both counted as part of the "Wisdom" section of the Bible, which seems appropriate.  And they do have Solomon in common.  As we've said before, at one time in both America and in England, it was common for the Bible to be part of school learning, and the Wisdom literature was expected to be read by all students and often copied out by hand every verse and perhaps committed to memory.  It was part of the atmosphere, if you like.  We no longer do that.  And it doesn't take real good eyes to notice the reduction in wisdom and wise behavior and words in our lands today.  Not sure I'd claim causality there, but there surely is correlation.  Perhaps we might consider, just perhaps, going back to what worked?

Ecclesiastes 1

1	The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2	Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
3	What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
4	One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
5	The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
6	The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.
7	All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
8	All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9	The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
10	Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

Ecclesiastes 2

1	I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
2	I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?
3	I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
4	I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:
5	I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:
6	I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:
7	I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:
8	I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.
9	So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
10	And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.
11	Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
12	And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
13	Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.
14	The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.
15	Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.
16	For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.
17	Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
18	Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.
19	And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.
20	Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.
21	For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
22	For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?
23	For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.
24	There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.
25	For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?
26	For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Ecclesiastes 3

1	To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
2	A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3	A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4	A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5	A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6	A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
7	A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

9	What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Monday, 16 Setember, 2013

trying for an early start today as we have quite a lot to do this week.  Lots to do, and little time to do it in.  Let us be at it.

This morning's reading is Proverbs 30 and 31, completing this work. 
I would be remiss if Proverbs 31 was not particularly called out.  I am married to a woman who fits the character described here, for which thank You, Lord.  But there are also a number of groups whose ministry and desire is to further and support such people.  As a guy, I'm not supposed to have a whole lot of say in them.  I will suggest that those interested might look up groups like Proverbs 31 Ministries, and there very definitely are others,  For those who do the FaceBook thing, there is at least one such there

Proverbs 30 

1	The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,
2	Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.
3	I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.
4	Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?
5	Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
6	Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

II Corinthians 8

1	Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia;
2	How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.
3	For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves;
4	Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.
5	And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.
6	Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.
7	Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.
8	I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Sunday, 15 September, 2013

late again, sigh.
Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest.  Hasn't turned out to be all of that.
Morning, that was OK.  Our little church is on the edge of the county, outside of any city limits and city services.  A number of years ago, some people got together and formed a volunteer fire department.  A number of our church's leaders were instrumental in that, one of whom is still living and a co-member of our deacon board.  There are now several stations in that fire district, one being directly across from the church house, about a hundred yards from the country line.  We make a point of holding a service on or as near to the 9/11 date as possible to thank them for their service to the community and in memory of all the first responders out there who, often for no pay and little thanks, daily extend themselves in service to their fellow citizens, and too often losing life or limb in the process.  As happened on 9/11.  So we held a worship service, took up a love offering for the department.  And then, being good Baptists, had a "fellowship meal" in the fellowship hall.
During the service, Dear Wife and yours truly were called out for a "laying on of hands" as part of the extended good-bye to this group and to the area.  We have made friends that we will miss and probably never again see in this life.  But we, and the church, are determined to treat our relocation as a door into a new ministry, an advance rather than a retreat.  I do believe the Lord is in this, His will be done.
Got home, decided to nap for a bit.  Car doors outside.
Went to look, and behold, our :couch dweller" was coming up the front steps followed by his half-sister's husband and his belongings from the hospital he's been in for nearly two weeks.  We had already packed his stuff and notified those parts of his family that they now have the responsibility for him, we are moving, he's not coming with us and he's not coming back here.  There followed a good hour of intense phone exchanges.  His one half-sister, the one who lives 20 minutes or so from here and has been no part of his care during the 4-1/2 YEARS he's been leeching off us, came by to wail that she can't do anything and her 15 year old kid is in the car and hungry now and can't we do something?  Answer to that being no. 
In the end, we packed him up in our car, along with ALL of his stuff, took him to a local 'extended stay' hotel with free tv and phone, gave him $200 which is a sore sacrifice indeed, and left him there.  He's gone. 
There followed several hours of phone calls from those who were incensed at our actions, but none of whom had had interest in his well being for the last 4-1/2 years, nor were willing to take personal involvement in the matter now.  Just wanted us to do so.  Answer is still no. 
Lord willing, in 8 days we will be nearly a thousand miles from here setting up last minute stuff on the move,and this will be behind us.
But this is not the day of rest we'd planned.

Should be an interesting week.

II Corinthians 7

3	I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you.

5	For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.

10	For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Saturday, 14 September, 2013

things are moving fast, I guess.  The dates are, certainly.  Visible accomplishments, not so much.  We're hoping to be MOVED in two weeks, and we've been packing and such, and it still looks like we've done little. 
Middle of the night here.  Dear Wife is passed out in bed, I need to get her up about now.  Try to do as much of the heavy stuff in the cool hours as possible, with A/C essentially gone.  We have concluded a deal to sell off our little place, with him looking at taking possession around the first of the month.  Lots to do yet, and one of the needed documents is missing, so we spent much of yesterday down at the appropriate government offices, waiting in line behind a whole bunch of people, and repeatedly explaining what was needed to a clerk who had to go for instructions every few minutes.  Are we the only ones who have to go through such things out of our own, somewhat disorganized, life?  Guess so.
Anyway, I'm sitting at the kitchen table, sipping coffee, munching a fat pill (a Krispy Kreme donut) and thinking about the past and the future.  A few years ago, we were at a family "do" in the area we are moving back to.  It was Christmas, and I noticed the churches half empty at a time of year they were normally over-flowing, and most present had seen a LOT of winters.  Foolishly perhaps, when we came back, I told our pastor that "I don't think I'm the one to lead a reawakening among the "cultural Christians" of that area, but someone should."  Dear Wife is telling me that was like one of those "here am I, send me" moments we see in Scripture.  Don't think I measure up, but the issue is a real one.
So we shall see.  This could get interesting.

The morning's Old Testament passage is Proverbs 25, 26, 26

Proverbs 25

1	These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
2	It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
3	The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
4	Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.
5	Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
6	Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:
7	For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.
8	Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.
9	Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another:

Proverbs 26

Proverbs 27

II Corinthians 6

1	We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.
2	(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
3	Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:
4	But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,
5	In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;
6	By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,
7	By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,
8	By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;
