Today's Readings and Stuff -- Friday, 28 September 2018

Wild rant alert:

I know, know very well, the importance of focusing on the really important matters.  And the distinction between the important and the urgent.  But some times .....
We have cats.  Well, Wife does.  We first got cats 20+ years ago, several states ago, at a time when our various situations, especially our finances and health,  were much different.  We /she now have three, including the "rescue" one.  (And, I am not a "pet person".  Never have been.  At least cats don't bark.).  One acts as a service animal for Wife, he seems to know when she's not doing well and provides some emotional comfort to her.  All of them inside creatures only, and, therefore, we have to provide food and kitty litter.  Can get into a fair amount.  We found that the most cost-effective approach (short of drowning them all) was to order the stuff monthly from an on-line supplier named Chewy.  Good stuff, good prices, and they deliver right to the door via Fed Ex.  Note, that is FedEx Home, not quite the same people as the ones who I used professionally for many years in many places, mission-critical stuff.  Our monthly shipment was due yesterday afternoon.  Never showed.  Checking with them revealed the stuff was shipped Wednesday, for delivery yesterday (Thursday) as usual.  But FedEx claims they can't locate our address!  Now, this is the same bunch that has mis-delivered four deliveries in three years, including one or two to the wrong STREET!  We spoke with local terminal, thought we had stuff explained.  Nope.  Can't locate the address.  Part of  problem is that they are using Google's maps function, the "street view" portion.  Unfortunately, that view was last updated in 2011, SEVEN YEARS AGO!, our place wasn't even here at the time, but several since-demolished houses were.  The "satellite view", a simple overhead view, updated this year, shows our place quite nicely, and also reflects accuracy with regard to several places where the demolished houses are shown gone.  But evidently, such expertise is beyond these people.

So, I'm not in a great mood, as I prepare to go down the street to a "dollar store" and get enough litter and cheap dry food to last a couple days.  FedEx just notifies us, again, that delivery will be tomorrow.  Yeah, right.  Is basic competence too much to ask?  Apparently so.

5Enflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks?

7Upon a lofty and high mountain hast thou set thy bed: even thither wentest thou up to offer sacrifice.

Isaiah 58

1Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

2Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.

3Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

4Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

5Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the Lord?

8Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rearward.

1st Timothy 4

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Thursday, 27 September 2018

Counting down the last few days of September.  Should we still be around a week from today, we will be well and truly into October.  👎   Today's "day" has been 11 hours 57 minutes, and is set to be 2 minutes 43 seconds less on the morrow.  Boo!

Yesterday was the birthday of our son-in-law, husband to older daughter.  We sent a "happy birthday" to him, but got nary a syllable back.  Which is not surprising.  We've known Brian since 2004 when we moved into that small town.  He and his brother, his now-deceased brother, were often in our home as we became sort of honorary parents to quite a few in that general age cohort, particularly for those whose home situation was somewhat less than ideal.  But now we are adjudged to be un-persons, as both Brian and daughter are "Bernie-bots", half a step from the "antifa" types.  Makes for a less-than-wonderful situation, but it is what it is.

Just over three months left in the year, 95 days until the end of the year.  I wish that there were some accomplishments to be proud of, but there aren't.

1st Timothy 3

6Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

7Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

8Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

9Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

10And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.

11Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

12Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

13For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

15But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

16And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
