Today's Readings -- 28 August 2010
recovering conciousness, somewhat, after yet another long night, the 291st episode in the "short stint" on the night shift that I was "asked" to take to give someone else a "short break" from it. Last year. Evidently we have a linguistic disconnect here. So, sorry, things have been a bit ragged here lately. Sorry, truly.
Today's readings begin in the Psalms, with Psalms 136, 137, 138. You may find 137 a bit hard. It starts out one way, and ends another.
1 | O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
2 | O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
3 | O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
4 | To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
5 | To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
6 | To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
7 | To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever: |
8 | The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever: |
9 | The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
10 | To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: for his mercy endureth for ever: |
11 | And brought out Israel from among them: for his mercy endureth for ever: |
12 | With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
13 | To him which divided the Red sea into parts: for his mercy endureth for ever: |
14 | And made Israel to pass through the midst of it: for his mercy endureth for ever: |
15 | But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
16 | To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
17 | To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endureth for ever: |
18 | And slew famous kings: for his mercy endureth for ever: |
19 | Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endureth for ever: |
20 | And Og the king of Bashan: for his mercy endureth for ever: |
21 | And gave their land for an heritage: for his mercy endureth for ever: |
22 | Even an heritage unto Israel his servant: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
23 | Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever: |
24 | And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
25 | Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
26 | O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever. |
1 | By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. |
2 | We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. |
3 | For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. |
4 | How shall we sing the LORD's song in a strange land? |
5 | If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. |
6 | If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy. |
7 | Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof. |
8 | O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. |
9 | Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones. |
1 | I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee. |
2 | I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. |
3 | In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul. |
4 | All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O LORD, when they hear the words of thy mouth. |
5 | Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the LORD: for great is the glory of the LORD. |
6 | Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off. |
7 | Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me. |
8 | The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands. |
We then go on to 1st Corinthians 9.
1 | Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord? |
2 | If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord. |
3 | Mine answer to them that do examine me is this, |
4 | Have we not power to eat and to drink? |
5 | Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? |
6 | Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working? |
7 | Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock? |
8 | Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also? |
9 | For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen? |
10 | Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope. |
11 | If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? |
12 | If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ. |
13 | Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? |
14 | Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. |
15 | But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void. |
16 | For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! |
17 | For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me. |
18 | What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel. |
19 | For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. |
20 | And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; |
21 | To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. |
22 | To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. |
23 | And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you. |
24 | Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. |
25 | And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. |
26 | I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: |
27 | But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. |
