Today's Readings and Stuff -- Saturday, 22 February, 2014
The last Saturday in February. Spring is not here, especially in this part of the country, but the Vernal Equinox is only about four weeks away. I love so many people in this part of the country. The weather, not so much. Not at all in fact. But, it comes with the territory.
Local church has an outreach of bulk food purchases, no junk food, lots of frozen items and non-perishables. Price is quite reasonable. We bought some extra and gave it to a family member who is going through a rough time -- rougher even than we are. They were so grateful and it will be used well. Came home, stuffed it in freezer, had a few bites of it, and vegged out for a while.
Nephew's wife and the two kids, both small, came by and went through Dear Wife's clothes closet. She hauled off some stuff that no longer fits (shrank in traveling, of course) which helps her out. They are also going through some tough times. Lots of that in this area. Lots of abandoned houses, closed businesses, broken-up streets, lots of signs of hard times. There are places within walking distance that look like pictures out of the Great Depression. Lots of hopelessness.
Perhaps that was why we were sent here. We shall see.
====================
The Old Testament reading for the day is chapter 7 from the book of Numbers.
1
And
it came to pass on the day that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle,
and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof,
both the altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and
sanctified them;
2
That
the princes of Israel, heads of the house of their fathers, who were
the princes of the tribes, and were over them that were numbered,
offered:
3
And
they brought their offering before the LORD, six covered wagons, and
twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for each one an ox: and
they brought them before the tabernacle.
4
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
5
Take
it of them, that they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of the
congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man
according to his service.
6
And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites.
7
Two wagons and four oxen he gave unto the sons of Gershon, according to their service:
8
And
four wagons and eight oxen he gave unto the sons of Merari, according
unto their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the
priest.
9
But
unto the sons of Kohath he gave none: because the service of the
sanctuary belonging unto them was that they should bear upon their
shoulders.
10
And
the princes offered for dedicating of the altar in the day that it was
anointed, even the princes offered their offering before the altar.

==============================
The New Testament passage is verses 21-41 of Mark's gospel chapter 4.
21
And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick?
22
For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.
23
If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
24
And
he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete,
it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
25
For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.
26
And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground;
27
And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how.
28
For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.
29
But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.
30
And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
31
It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:
32
But
when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs,
and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge
under the shadow of it.
33
And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it.
34
But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.
35
And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.
36
And
when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in
the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.
37
And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
38
And
he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they
awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
39
And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
40
And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
41
And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
