Today's Readings and Stuff -- Saturday, 17 March 2018

Happy Saturday to all.
Another day closer to half-decent weather, which will be the case for too short a time.  Oh, well.  24° here right now, but supposed to hit 44 later.  Then 24° tonight.  Up & down.  But 11 hours 59 minutes of "day", far better than, I think, the 9 hours 10 minutes that we had back in December.  Going in the right direction at least, and picking up another 2 minutes 46 seconds by tomorrow.
I watch temperatures as only someone who loathes NE Ohio winters does.  Probably is mildly amusing to those who don't mind it.  Friend of my sister-in-law has a son off to college who has "drunk the Kool-Ade" on the whole "glow-bull warming" fraud.  As someone who spent 30 years or so trying to do some data-based analyses, often with measurement systems less than reliable, I remain unconvinced.  There is a weather forecasting/info site called "wunderground.com", which allows you to specify a location, and shows current and predicted future conditions for the day and the next 10 days.  They have quite a network of weather reporting stations.  Just in my area, there are about 20 such stations within about a 25-mile radius.  Right now, in that zone, I see a range from a low of 17.6° to a high of 27.3°.  In a 25-mile radius!  With that much variation in a limited area, who knows the "real" temperature of the earth?  No one, and it's a ridiculous concept.  We know that we don't have glaciers a mile thick on top of us, as some tell us was once the case right here.   We also know very well that snow and sub-zero temperatures are also not unknown in this area, having experienced both this winter.  But the "warmists" would draw attention to that 27.3° reading and use it, and it alone, to "prove" the case for "warming".  By the way, that 27.3 reading was taken near our church, in an neighborhood near "Hells Corners".  No comment.
-- end of rant --

One of the issues I've been dwelling on is prayer.  How often do we hear or see or seek promises of prayer for others, often quite automatically and vaguely?  How often are those words carried through?  I am guilty on this, perhaps I am not alone in that.  Another thing to change, and now.  I believe fully that the fervent prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.  Just saying you'll pray for someone isn't.

It is good to remember what the Lord has done for us and how He has brought us to where we are.

Numbers 33
1  These are the journeys of the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron.
2  And Moses wrote their goings out according to their journeys by the commandment of the Lord: and these are their journeys according to their goings out.
3  And they departed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the morrow after the passover the children of Israel went out with an high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians.
4  For the Egyptians buried all their firstborn, which the Lord had smitten among them: upon their gods also the Lord executed judgments.
5  And the children of Israel removed from Rameses, and pitched in Succoth.
6  And they departed from Succoth, and pitched in Etham, which is in the edge of the wilderness.
7  And they removed from Etham, and turned again unto Pi–hahiroth, which is before Baal–zephon: and they pitched before Migdol.
8  And they departed from before Pi–hahiroth, and passed through the midst of the sea into the wilderness, and went three days' journey in the wilderness of Etham, and pitched in Marah.
9  And they removed from Marah, and came unto Elim: and in Elim were twelve fountains of water, and threescore and ten palm trees; and they pitched there.
10  And they removed from Elim, and encamped by the Red sea.
11  And they removed from the Red sea, and encamped in the wilderness of Sin.
12  And they took their journey out of the wilderness of Sin, and encamped in Dophkah.
13  And they departed from Dophkah, and encamped in Alush.
14  And they removed from Alush, and encamped at Rephidim, where was no water for the people to drink.
15  And they departed from Rephidim, and pitched in the wilderness of Sinai.
16  And they removed from the desert of Sinai, and pitched at Kibroth–hattaavah.Kibroth–hattaavah
17  And they departed from Kibroth–hattaavah, and encamped at Hazeroth.
18  And they departed from Hazeroth, and pitched in Rithmah.
19  And they departed from Rithmah, and pitched at Rimmon–perez.
20  And they departed from Rimmon–perez, and pitched in Libnah.
21  And they removed from Libnah, and pitched at Rissah.
22  And they journeyed from Rissah, and pitched in Kehelathah.
23  And they went from Kehelathah, and pitched in mount Shapher.
24  And they removed from mount Shapher, and encamped in Haradah.
25  And they removed from Haradah, and pitched in Makheloth.
26  And they removed from Makheloth, and encamped at Tahath.
27  And they departed from Tahath, and pitched at Tarah.
28  And they removed from Tarah, and pitched in Mithcah.
29  And they went from Mithcah, and pitched in Hashmonah.
30  And they departed from Hashmonah, and encamped at Moseroth.
31  And they departed from Moseroth, and pitched in Bene–jaakan.
32  And they removed from Bene–jaakan, and encamped at Hor–haggiggad.
33  And they went from Hor–haggiggad, and pitched in Jotbathah.
34  And they removed from Jotbathah, and encamped at Ebronah.
35  And they departed from Ebronah, and encamped at Ezion–geber.
36  And they removed from Ezion–geber, and pitched in the wilderness of Zin, which is Kadesh.
37  And they removed from Kadesh, and pitched in mount Hor, in the edge of the land of Edom.
38  And Aaron the priest went up into mount Hor at the commandment of the Lord, and died there, in the fortieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the first day of the fifth month.
39  And Aaron was an hundred and twenty and three years old when he died in mount Hor.
40  And king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south in the land of Canaan, heard of the coming of the children of Israel.
41  And they departed from mount Hor, and pitched in Zalmonah.

47  And they removed from Almon–diblathaim, and pitched in the mountains of Abarim, before Nebo.
48  And they departed from the mountains of Abarim, and pitched in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.
49  And they pitched by Jordan, from Beth–jeshimoth even unto Abel–shittim in the plains of Moab.Abel–shittim
50  And the Lord spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,
51  Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye are passed over Jordan into the land of Canaan;
52  Then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures, and destroy all their molten images, and quite pluck down all their high places:
53  And ye shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land, and dwell therein: for I have given you the land to possess it.
54  And ye shall divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families: and to the more ye shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer ye shall give the less inheritance: every man's inheritance shall be in the place where his lot falleth; according to the tribes of your fathers ye shall inherit.
55  But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.
56  Moreover it shall come to pass, that I shall do unto you, as I thought to do unto them.

Numbers 34
1  And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
2  Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land of Canaan; (this is the land that shall fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan with the coasts thereof:)
3  Then your south quarter shall be from the wilderness of Zin along by the coast of Edom, and your south border shall be the outmost coast of the salt sea eastward:
4  And your border shall turn from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim, and pass on to Zin: and the going forth thereof shall be from the south to Kadesh–barnea, and shall go on to Hazar–addar, and pass on to Azmon:
5  And the border shall fetch a compass from Azmon unto the river of Egypt, and the goings out of it shall be at the sea.
6  And as for the western border, ye shall even have the great sea for a border: this shall be your west border.
7  And this shall be your north border: from the great sea ye shall point out for you mount Hor:
8  From mount Hor ye shall point out your border unto the entrance of Hamath; and the goings forth of the border shall be to Zedad:
9  And the border shall go on to Ziphron, and the goings out of it shall be at Hazar–enan: this shall be your north border.
10  And ye shall point out your east border from Hazar–enan to Shepham:
11  And the coast shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain; and the border shall descend, and shall reach unto the side of the sea of Chinnereth eastward:side of the sea: Heb. shoulder of the sea
12  And the border shall go down to Jordan, and the goings out of it shall be at the salt sea: this shall be your land with the coasts thereof round about.
13 And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, This is the land which ye shall inherit by lot, which the Lord commanded to give unto the nine tribes, and to the half tribe:
14  For the tribe of the children of Reuben according to the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to the house of their fathers, have received their inheritance; and half the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance:
15  The two tribes and the half tribe have received their inheritance on this side Jordan near Jericho eastward, toward the sunrising.
16  And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
17  These are the names of the men which shall divide the land unto you: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun.
18  And ye shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land by inheritance.
19  And the names of the men are these: Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
20  And of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud.
21  Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon.
22  And the prince of the tribe of the children of Dan, Bukki the son of Jogli.
23  The prince of the children of Joseph, for the tribe of the children of Manasseh, Hanniel the son of Ephod.
24  And the prince of the tribe of the children of Ephraim, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan.
25  And the prince of the tribe of the children of Zebulun, Elizaphan the son of Parnach.
26  And the prince of the tribe of the children of Issachar, Paltiel the son of Azzan.
27  And the prince of the tribe of the children of Asher, Ahihud the son of Shelomi.
28  And the prince of the tribe of the children of Naphtali, Pedahel the son of Ammihud.
29  These are they whom the Lord commanded to divide the inheritance unto the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Friday, 16 March 2018

Happy Friday to all.  The huge "lake effect" snow dump that we were expecting last night appears to be about an inch.  Yes, we have some flakes falling down now, and swirling around in the air, but not "white out" conditions.  But I'm not sure of what the roads are like, and have no where to be today, which is fine by me.
I'd expected to have to go out today, headed Across The Line to the Pharmacy to pick up the shipped-in unusual meds refill for wife.  But she got notified early afternoon yesterday that they'd arrived, so I thought to go then and to avoid a blizzard situation today.  No harm done.
We are now in the 2nd half of March.  Official beginning of Spring is in just a few days.  Doesn't mean the end of snow and cold of course, not around here.  But a hopeful mile marker.

Another night of weird dreams and a couple of songs.  One in particular, I was in a large place, reminded me of a convention center or very large hall.  And filled with people, vendor tables, all that.  And all, every one of them, in sadness and sorrow, all consumed with loneliness and loss of hope, no love, no joy.  And no God.  I remember speaking to a few of them, complimenting them on some thing of vague detail, and they broke down in tears.  I was given to understand that, for many there, it was the first words of affirmation that they'd heard in VERY long times, the first words that might be a ray of hope.  None of them knew the Lord, except perhaps as an element of bad language.
Our world is full of similar cases.  What are we doing to address that?

People Need  The Lord is one of the songs that came to mind in that.  It's an old one, but good.  And the video that accompanies this one is well done.

I Need Thee Every Hour
Yes, I need Him every hour and every second.  So do we all.  Sometimes we forget that.  And some were never told.

and then, with a worthy preface here,  Then Came  The Morning
appropriate this time of year, but also the rest of the year.

======================================

The Old Testament passage is chapters 31 and 32 in the book of Numbers
This is  something that upsets some of our "liberal" friends.  War and slaughter and judgment, commanded by the Lord.

Numbers 31
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
2  Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people.
3  And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge the Lord of Midian.
4  Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war.
So there were delivered out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
6  And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of every tribe, them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and the trumpets to blow in his hand.
7  And they warred against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded Moses; and they slew all the males.
8  And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.
9  And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods.
10  And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire.
11  And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of men and of beasts.
12  And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan near Jericho.
13  And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp.
14  And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.
15  And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?
16  Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord.
17  Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
18  But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.
19  And do ye abide without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify both yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.
20  And purify all your raiment, and all that is made of skins, and all work of goats' hair, and all things made of wood.
21  And Eleazar the priest said unto the men of war which went to the battle, This is the ordinance of the law which the Lord commanded Moses;
22  Only the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,
23  Every thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water.
24  And ye shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean, and afterward ye shall come into the camp.
25  And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
26  Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast, thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the congregation:
27  And divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:
28  And levy a tribute unto the Lord of the men of war which went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the beeves, and of the asses, and of the sheep:
29  Take it of their half, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, for an heave offering of the Lord.
30  And of the children of Israel's half, thou shalt take one portion of fifty, of the persons, of the beeves, of the asses, and of the flocks, of all manner of beasts, and give them unto the Levites, which keep the charge of the tabernacle of the Lord.
31  And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.
32  And the booty, being the rest of the prey which the men of war had caught, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand sheep,
33  And threescore and twelve thousand beeves,
34  And threescore and one thousand asses,
35  And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.
36  And the half, which was the portion of them that went out to war, was in number three hundred thousand and seven and thirty thousand and five hundred sheep:
37  And the Lord's tribute of the sheep was six hundred and threescore and fifteen.
38  And the beeves were thirty and six thousand; of which the Lord's tribute was threescore and twelve.
39  And the asses were thirty thousand and five hundred; of which the Lord's tribute was threescore and one.
40  And the persons were sixteen thousand; of which the Lord's tribute was thirty and two persons.
41  And Moses gave the tribute, which was the Lord's heave offering, unto Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses.
42  And of the children of Israel's half, which Moses divided from the men that warred,
43  (Now the half that pertained unto the congregation was three hundred thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred sheep,
44  And thirty and six thousand beeves,
45  And thirty thousand asses and five hundred,
46  And sixteen thousand persons;)
47  Even of the children of Israel's half, Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the Lord; as the Lord commanded Moses.
48  And the officers which were over thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near unto Moses:
49  And they said unto Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of war which are under our charge, and there lacketh not one man of us.
50  We have therefore brought an oblation for the Lord, what every man hath gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the Lord.
51  And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, even all wrought jewels.
52  And all the gold of the offering that they offered up to the Lord, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53  (For the men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.)
54  And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of the congregation, for a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord.

Numbers 32

Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;
2  The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying,
3  Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,
4  Even the country which the Lord smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle:
5  Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.
6  And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here?
7  And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the Lord hath given them?
8  Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh–barnea to see the land.
9  For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the Lord had given them.
10  And the Lord's anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying,
11  Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:
12  Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the Lord.
13  And the Lord's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the Lord, was consumed.
14  And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers' stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the Lord toward Israel.
15  For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people.
16  And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:
17  But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
18  We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.
19  For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.
20  And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the Lord to war,
21  And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the Lord, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him,
22  And the land be subdued before the Lord: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the Lord, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the Lord.
23  But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out.
24  Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.
25  And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth.
26  Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead:
27  But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the Lord to battle, as my lord saith.
28  So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:
29  And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the Lord, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:
30  But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.
31  And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the Lord hath said unto thy servants, so will we do.
32  We will pass over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours.
33  And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about.
34  And the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
35  And Atroth Shophan, and Jaazer, and Jogbehah,Jaazer: also called, Jazer
36  And Beth–nimrah, and Beth–haran, fenced cities: and folds for sheep.Beth–nimrah: also called, Nimrah
37  And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,
38  And Nebo, and Baal–meon, (their names being changed,) and Sibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded.gave…: Heb. they called by names the names of the cities
39  And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it.
40  And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh; and he dwelt therein.
41  And Jair the son of Manasseh went and took the small towns thereof, and called them Havoth–jair.
42  And Nobah went and took Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

Psalm 55

To the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, A Psalm of David.
1  Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication
Attend unto me, and hear me: I mourn in my complaint, and make a noise;
3  Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.
4  My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.
5  Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.
6  And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.
7  Lo, then would I wander far off, and remain in the wilderness. Selah.
8  I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.
9  Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
10  Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof: mischief also and sorrow are in the midst of it.
11  Wickedness is in the midst thereof: deceit and guile depart not from her streets.
12  For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:
13  But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.
14  We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.
15  Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them.
16  As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me.
17  Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.
18  He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.
19  God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.
20  He hath put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him: he hath broken his covenant.
21  The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.
22  Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved
23  But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

Luke 10

After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
2  Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
3  Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.
4   Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way.
5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house.
6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.
8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you:
9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say,
11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
13 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
14  But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.
15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.
16  He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
17  And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
18  And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
19   Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
20  Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
21  In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.
22  All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
23  And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see:
24   For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
25  And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
26  He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
27  And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
28  And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
29  But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
30  And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
31   And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,
34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.
35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?
37And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
38  Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39  And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
40  But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41  And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42  But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Thursday, 15 March 2018

Happy Thursday to all.

We have a dryer!!!  Yay!!  I just a moment ago finished wiring up the used-but-usable clothes dryer that Wife found on a buy-sell site for a whole $60!  It about wiped us out, leaving just about enough for when I go tomorrow (or so it appears) to the Pharmacy to pick up one of her prescriptions that had to be shipped in (one of those unusual ones).  Our old dryer was wired to a 4-prong plug, which fit up to the 4-prong plug in our laundry area.  This one came with a 3-prong plug, so there was a rewiring that had to take place.  We pushed it back into place, tried it, and it heats.  Hurrah!!  No more having jeans, towels, sheets, etc. hanging on one of those collapsible drying rack thingies in our "living room", and for two days or so at that: jeans and towels take a long time to dry.
But it made me think about some stuff.  We take a lot of these things for granted.  Toss stuff into a washing machine or a dishwasher, etc., turn it on and forget about it.  I grew up, the oldest kid, having to help my Mom hang clothes outside on a line.  Yes indeed (and a good number of my cousins still do that).  That was after I'd helped her with that old wringer-type washing machine and two rinse tubs (and a hose from the bathtub faucet to fill them and another hose from the tubs and washer to that same tub's drain).  But she was happy:  her mother (and dad's) had used washboards, not washing machines, and had to heat the water on coal stoves first.  A water heater was unheard of.  So she was happy.  Wasn't all good of course:  You haven't lived until you've gotten clothes off the line that are frozen stiff from being out there in 15° weather.  Or had to hang them wherever you could in the  house to finish drying.  A dryer does away with all that, but who thinks to thank the Lord for one?
Our church had missionaries visiting two weeks ago.  They serve in Africa.  Nice people.  She's from Indiana (but not related to my relatives there: I asked).  She showed photos of having to "do" their clothes in big pots on an open fire.  Not what she was used to in Indiana.  A bit of culture shock.  But they persevere, and are engaged in a great work.

But we also neglect to give thanks for having clothes to wash.  Having at one time been down to the clothes on my back, I remember that.

An "attitude of gratitude".  A very important thing.  We don't realize how blessed we are until something goes wrong.

The weather prognosticators tell us that we shall have "lake effect" snow starting this evening.  For the uniformed, we live about 60 miles south of the Great Lakes, that vast inland sea.  At various times during the winter, a cold blast comes out of NW Canada, nicknamed the "Alberta Clipper", comes across the relatively warmer Great Lakes and picks up moisture therefrom, then comes overland above an area that is colder than the water, and dumps megatons of moisture in the form of snow.  Heavy snow.  Part of the "joy" of living in these parts.  Sometimes, those warning are overblown.  Sometimes, the area gets a foot or more of snow.  That's a whole lot of misery.  And it may be heading our way this very evening.

40  And Moses told the children of Israel according to all that the Lord commanded Moses.

Numbers 30
1  And Moses spake unto the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the Lord hath commanded.
2  If a man vow a vow unto the Lord, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.break: Heb. profane
3  If a woman also vow a vow unto the Lord, and bind herself by a bond, being in her father's house in her youth;
4  And her father hear her vow, and her bond wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father shall hold his peace at her: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand.
5  But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not any of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and the Lord shall forgive her, because her father disallowed her.
6  And if she had at all an husband, when she vowed, or uttered ought out of her lips, wherewith she bound her soul;she vowed: Heb. her vows were upon her
7  And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her in the day that he heard it: then her vows shall stand, and her bonds wherewith she bound her soul shall stand.
8  But if her husband disallowed her on the day that he heard it; then he shall make her vow which she vowed, and that which she uttered with her lips, wherewith she bound her soul, of none effect: and the Lord shall forgive her.
9  But every vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced, wherewith they have bound their souls, shall stand against her.
10  And if she vowed in her husband's house, or bound her soul by a bond with an oath;
11  And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her, and disallowed her not: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she bound her soul shall stand.
12  But if her husband hath utterly made them void on the day he heard them; then whatsoever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made them void; and the Lord shall forgive her.
13  Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void.
14  But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day; then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her: he confirmeth them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them.
15  But if he shall any ways make them void after that he hath heard them; then he shall bear her iniquity.
16  These are the statutes, which the Lord commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between the father and his daughter, being yet in her youth in her father's house.

Psalm 54

To the chief Musician on Neginoth, Maschil, A Psalm of David, when the Ziphites came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us?
1  Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me by thy strength.
2  Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth.
3  For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek after my soul: they have not set God before them. Selah.
4  Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.
5  He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: cut them off in thy truth.
6  I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O Lord; for it is good.
7  For he hath delivered me out of all trouble: and mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies.

Luke 9

Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
2  And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
3  And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
4  And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
5  And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
6  And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
7  Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;
8  And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
9  And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.
10  And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
11  And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
12  And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.
13  But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.
14  For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.
15  And they did so, and made them all sit down.
16  Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.
17  And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
18  And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
19  They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
20  He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
21  And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
22  Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.
27  But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
28  And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
29  And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
30  And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
32  But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
33  And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
34  While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
35  And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
36  And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.
38  And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.
39  And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.
40  And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
41  And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
42  And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
43  And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,
44  Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
45  But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
46  Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
47  And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
48  And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
49  And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
50  And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
51  And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
52  And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
53  And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
54  And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
55  But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
56   For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
57  And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58  And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59  And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60  Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
61  And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62  And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
