Zechariah 10

Zechariah 11

1 Open thy doors, O Lebanon, that the fire may devour thy cedars. 2 Howl, fir tree; for the cedar is fallen; because the mighty are spoiled: howl, O ye oaks of Bashan; for the forest of the vintage is come down. 3 There is a voice of the howling of the shepherds; for their glory is spoiled: a voice of the roaring of young lions; for the pride of Jordan is spoiled. 4 Thus saith the LORD my God; Feed the flock of the slaughter; 5 Whose possessors slay them, and hold themselves not guilty: and they that sell them say, Blessed be the LORD; for I am rich: and their own shepherds pity them not. 6 For I will no more pity the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD: but, lo, I will deliver the men every one into his neighbour's hand, and into the hand of his king: and they shall smite the land, and out of their hand I will not deliver them. 7 And I will feed the flock of slaughter, even you, O poor of the flock. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD. 14 Then I cut asunder mine other staff, even Bands, that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel. 15 And the LORD said unto me, Take unto thee yet the instruments of a foolish shepherd. 16 For, lo, I will raise up a shepherd in the land, which shall not visit those that be cut off, neither shall seek the young one, nor heal that that is broken, nor feed that that standeth still: but he shall eat the flesh of the fat, and tear their claws in pieces. 17 Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.

Zechariah 12

1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him. 2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. 3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. 4 In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness. 5 And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God. 6 In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem. 7 The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah. 8 In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the LORD before them. 9 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. 10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. 11 In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. 12 And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart; 13 The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart; 14 All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.

 Revelation 20

1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. 4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. Today's Readings and Stuff -- Thursday, 30 December 30, 2021

It's the evening of the next-to-last day of the year.  Today was also the day that the trash trucks come by and haul off the junk of our lives.  We -- meaning I -- need to be intentional about getting the junk out of our lives, need to do more of it in fact.

We'd gotten a call this morning from the wife of Wife's nephew up along the state line.  They intend to go to some wild part hosted by friends of theirs and wanted us to "watch" their kids, 14 and 10, while they went out and got drunk.  We've done it on previous New Year's Eve nights.  So she agreed.  Fast forward several hours, and next-door niece called, and wanted to arrange/negotiate another arrangement, one that has us going next door, her brother and his wife -- the same ones who'd called us earlier -- to drop their kids and her house, and we, with her and her husband, will have their kids and the ones previously arranged, over next door.  The result being that we won't have to drive home in the early hours (last year around 04:30) dodging drunks and state troopers.  Sounds good.

So we'll spend time over the next few days remembering the things, good and bad, of the last year.  And -- prayerfully I hope -- roughing out the plans for the year to come.  Being intentional is something needed.

1 In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. 2 And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land. 3 And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth. 4 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive: 5 But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth. 6 And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. 7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones. 8 And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. 9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

Zechariah 14

Today's Readings and Stuff-- Tuesday, 28 December 2021

Sometimes, a picture, a song, a smell, whatever, can initiate a whole train of thought.  Anyone else have that?  Anyway, early today, I saw the photo below, a cloud, taken from above.  Perspective matters, doesn't it?  To those on the ground, it may appear huge, dark, foreboding.  To the airplane passengers, no big deal.  To a satellite, nothing much.  Perspective matters.

For the last several years, the clouds have seemed pretty big, dangerous, ominous.  Most of us have had some of our fears reinforced with sad realities,some close to home.  We're tempted to be gloomy, particularly for those of us who are almost biologically so inclined.

But the sun is still shining.  And, yes, the Son reigns.  And, like the song linked below, "It Won't Rain Always ".  I'm not quite to the point of "count it all joy", but that's where I should be.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Thursday, 23 December 2021

 Well, we're now at the next-to-last Thursday of the year.  The New Year is just around the corner.  We hope and fervently pray that the year coming will be better than what we've had over the last few years.  Make that FERVENTLY PRAY and regularly as well.  I know very well that the Lord is very much aware of the situations around the world, knew them before the world began in fact.  He truly, as the song says, "has the whole world in His hands", though we don't pretend to know what His plan is.  But I believe we play a part in it.

It's been a pretty rough week.  Brother-in-law was found dead Sunday morning.  Great-niece from  next door had her 9th birthday yesterday.  Sister-in-law's birthday is Saturday, Christmas Day.  And some other challenges ongoing all around us.  For example, Wife's nephew had ordered an urn for Jim's ashes.  Was promised for delivery last night, then delayed to 10 a.m. today.  But the shipping company lost it! en route, so that adds to the mess.  

Plan is for us to go next door to get with the nieces, nephews, the "greats", sister-in-law, and all that.  With our current financial situation, we were able to get a few small gifts for the kids, nothing whatever for the grown-ups.  It is what it is.  But we'll have some togetherness, which is worth something.

Sadly, very sadly, we will again have no contact from our daughters, none of any kind.  None whatever.  

Doesn't help that my own brother was found dead in his apartment just a year ago, several days after he'd passed on.  Was living alone, had been for several years.  

So this season has more than a few sorrows that come with it.  But it makes one more aware that others are also experiencing some tough memories and circumstances.  But then, Joseph and Mary also didn't have an easy life.

I have to interject something here before the text.  Many of us know people with given names right from the Bible.  Names like David, Steven (as both of my grandfathers were), James, John, Levi, Mark, Caleb, and so forth.  You've probably never met someone whose given name is Habakkuk.  Now, I knew a family -- about 25 years ago -- who were expecting a baby, and had announced the intention to name the child -- if a boy I hope - with that name.  I lost track of that group and the family, so I don't know that outcome, but it would look odd on his school teachers' grade books.  Probably better than Judas, I guess.

Habakkuk 1

Today's Readings And Stuff -- Monday, 20 December 2021

 This is going to be a stressful week, which is unfortunate as we see Christmas Day, which should be an occasion of joy, approaching.  But this year will be different, and the memories will linger for years.  It was just a year ago that my own younger brother's lifeless body was discovered after lying there for several days.  But yesterday morning, before dawn, my brother-in-law passed over.  Which has and will affect many and for many years.  Certainly his wife, daughter, son, grandchildren, in-laws, and many others, are taking it hard.  As are those who had been his co-workers at the place he'd worked for 33 years.

So "joy" is likely to be in short supply.  Doesn't help that he and his wife, my sister-in-law, were not believers.  The plan is to perform a cremation -- something that COVID/Chinese flu -- has nearly required, to be followed at some point by a "celebration of life" at the antique tractor club he'd long been a member.

== and Wife is on phone right now, being informed that her half-brother has been diagnosed with lung cancer.   Have not seen him since their mother's funeral in 2007.

So neither joy nor happiness are likely to be plentiful this week.  (and, by the way, they mean different things, a subject demanding attention itself).

So things will be bumpy this week.

Micah 5

Very brief.

This has been a rough day in a hectic week.  

In the pre-dawn dark, we (Wife) got A Call.  Her sister and sister's husband had been hit hard with the COVID-19 and been essentially bed-ridden for days.  Lisa woke to find Jim not breathing.  She called 911 and attempted CPR, but to no avail.  Yes, he passed.  We got up, went next door.  Wife's niece, the daughter of the deceased, taking it very badly, was going to go over, meet mother at hospital, etc. , to be joined by husband as soon as he got off from his 12 hour night shift.  So Wife and I to stay with the kids.  

I sent word I wouldn't be at church services, not much else of a choice.  

Not been a good day.  The phones, social media, etc. have been active all day.

 Worst is that neither were/are believers.  I had hoped to be able to persuade them to change. Failed.  Which weighs heavy on me.  And should.

So, rough day.

Doesn't help that sister-in-law's birthday is a week from now, on Christmas day.  This will certainly affect the thoughts of many for years to come.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Friday, 03 December 2021

 Well into December I guess.  NOT my favorite time of the year and I won't even pretend otherwise.  Yes, being alive to see it, which a couple weeks ago didn't seem all that certain, is not the worst possible thing.  But it is still not my favorite time of year.

Wife and I are doing somewhat better/less awful coming out of our COVID-19 experience.  I expect that our quarantine will last until around the middle of the week to come, but at least we're not laying in bed 22+ hours per day wondering if we'll survive another day.  It wasn't fun, not at all.  But We Shall See.

So please forgive the major gaps in posting here.  This blog has been going on since around 2006 or so.  I don't flatter myself into thinking that the world is better because of it, but it has caused me to be perhaps more intentional and regular in my studies and reflection upon things.  The Lord has been very very good to me, and honoring Him is important.  Part of my introspections during the period of this COVID episode has been the forced realization of how much of my attentions and intents have been focused on matters that, while not necessarily dishonoring the Lord, have had little or none to do with honoring Him nor carrying out whatever mission and purpose He had for me.  Among other things, that's meant that I haven't carried out the proper mission to my own immediate family, which has not had good results.

Daniel 2

So they came and stood before the king. 3 And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream. 4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation. 5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill. 6 But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shew me the dream, and the interpretation thereof. 7 They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it. 8 The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me. 9 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof. 10 The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean. 11 And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh. 12 For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. 13 And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain. 14 Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king's guard, which was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon: 15 He answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel. 16 Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation. 17 Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions: 18 That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his: 21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: 22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him. 23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter. 24 Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation. 25 Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation. 26 The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof? 27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king; 28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these; 29 As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass. 30 But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart. 31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. 32 This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, 33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay. 34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. 35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. 36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king. 37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. 38 And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold. 39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. 40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. 41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. 43 And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. 45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure. 46 Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him. 47 The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret. 48 Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.

I John 2

1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. 7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. 10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. 12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake. 13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. 14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. 15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. 20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. 21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. 24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. 26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. 27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. 28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. 29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
