Today's Readings and Stuff -- Saturday, 30 June 2018

And another Saturday / weekend has arrived.
We're keeping an eye on the house next door, home of niece and her husband and kids.  His family has some sort of a permanent camp adjacent to a national forest Across The Line, and they're spending last night, today, and most of tomorrow in a camper they have set up there.  Bobby's parents have a camper parked there, so do some of his siblings, etc. so it's not just a tent pitched wherever they can.  This time, they took their son and daughter, and Wife's nephew's two kids (the cousins) along.  So ages range from 1 year to 11 years.  This is a "getaway"??  But they seem to be having fun, from what we were told.
So I keep a bit of a watch on the house, and went over to feed that "rescue" kitten they have.  The one that was supposed to have been "re-homed" this past Monday.

Today is the last day  of June.😣
Tomorrow we begin the last of the months with short names, which are the ONLY months that I can stand while in this area.  May is, of course, not only the month with the shortest name, but it is my very favorite of all.  June is OK, I guess, and July is bearable.  Both before and after that, no.  We are already, if nearly imperceptibly without instruments, seeing that the "day" portion of the 24 is lessening day by day.  Late December is ahead of us, and I hate the very thought of another winter.

Other than that, I have little to say or to relate.  Wife is exhibiting what I fear may be early signs of yet another sinus infection.  I'd planned to go down to help with the church "cleanup", but when she's like this, and there's no next-door help, I am reluctant to be out of the house for very long.  So I stayed home.

Today, chapters 19 and 20 of 1st Chronicles.
Remember that these accounts would have been of great interest to the Israelites during the Babylonian Captivity period.  It was of great importance that they maintain their culture, history, and, most importantly by far, their allegiance to the Lord.  Since the consequences of that failure of allegiance and obedience to His commands was all around there, this was important.

1st Chronicles 19

1  Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

22  And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

33  But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

44  Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

55  Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and thenreturn.

66  And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.

77  So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

88  And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

99  And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

1010  Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

1111  And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

1212  And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

1313  Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

1414  So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

11515  And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

1616  And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that werebeyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

1717  And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

1818  But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

1919  And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

1st Chronicles 20

1  And it came to pass, that after the year was expired, at the time that kings go out to battle, Joab led forth the power of the army, and wasted the country of the children of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem. And Joab smote Rabbah, and destroyed it.

22  And David took the crown of their king from off his head, and found it to weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it; and it was set upon David's head: and he brought also exceeding much spoil out of the city.

33  And he brought out the people that were in it, and cut them with saws, and with harrows of iron, and with axes. Even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

44  And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines; at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Sippai, that was of the children of the giant: and they were subdued.

55  And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver's beam.

66  And yet again there was war at Gath, where was a man of greatstature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the giant.

77  But when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea David's brother slew him.

88  These were born unto the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

ooops!  The "publish" button that I thought I'd hit around 1:15 this afternoon turned out to not have done so.  So this is going out VERY late.


Happy Friday to all.  Quiet here, mostly.  In about 90 minutes or so, I need to walk up to the corner to meet Great-Niece when the bus drops her after her pre-K day.  Several more weeks of this.  After that, waiting for her mom & dad to get home, and then they're off on a camping thing until Sunday evening.  So I "get" to drag their worthless mutt outside several times a day to "do his business", and then back inside.  

The nephew-in-law has been unemployed about six weeks now.  He's been applying and all that throughout.  Tuesday, one potential employer sent him for medical check and drug test, so they're definitely interested.  But yesterday he got a call from a much nearer outfit that he'd applied to almost from the first day.  So now he may have to choose one or the other.  Could be worse, but in the meantime things are tight.

I had a weird sleep.  Not troubled, not as I measure these things anyway, but lots of thoughts, places, people (including mostly faces I've never seen and places I've never been), lots of stuff.  

But I woke with three "song of the day" candidates, and I like them all.

1st Chronicles 17

1 Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the Lord remaineth under curtains.

2 Then Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee.

3 And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,

4 Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in:

5 For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.

6 Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me an house of cedars?

12 He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever.

13 I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee:

14 But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore.

15 According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

16 And David the king came and sat before the Lord, and said, Who am I, O Lord God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?

17 And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant's house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O LordGod.

18 What can David speak more to thee for the honour of thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant.

19 O Lord, for thy servant's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.

20 O Lord, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

21 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt?

22 For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, Lord, becamest their God.

23 Therefore now, Lord, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.

24 Let it even be established, that thy name may be magnified for ever, saying, The Lord of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee.

1st Chronicles 18

1 Now after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them, and took Gath and her towns out of the hand of the Philistines.

2 And he smote Moab; and the Moabites became David's servants, and brought gifts.

3 And David smote Hadarezer king of Zobah unto Hamath, as he went to stablish his dominion by the river Euphrates.

4 And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: David also houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them an hundred chariots.

5 And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadarezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.

6 Then David put garrisons in Syriadamascus; and the Syrians became David's servants, and brought gifts. Thus the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

7 And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadarezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

9 Now when Tou king of Hamath heard how David had smitten all the host of Hadarezer king of Zobah;

10 He sent Hadoram his son to king David, to enquire of his welfare, and to congratulate him, because he had fought against Hadarezer, and smitten him; (for Hadarezer had war with Tou;) and with him all manner of vessels of gold and silver and brass.

11 Them also king David dedicated unto the Lord, with the silver and the gold that he brought from all these nations; from Edom, and from Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek.

13 And he put garrisons in Edom; and all the Edomites became David's servants. Thus the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

15 And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, recorder.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Thursday, 28 June 2018

Bit glum today.
Last evening, Wife got a call.  One of "those" calls.  She grew up in a small, remote area with some fairly nasty stuff that went on off the radar.  In the midst of all that, some people were very good to her family.  Some of those people were two identical twins.  Neither one likely to be named "citizen of the year", and they married (eventually, after a failed start or three) two women who were somewhat close.  For most of their lives, they've pretty much lived next to each other, worked at the same job in the same place, spent most of their days together.  Eventually, the women tired of each other and bickered a lot, but whatever.  They retired and moved away, living next door to each other.
OK, whatever.
But, last evening, Wife got the call that one of them, "Bob", has cancer, advanced, and has possibly three weeks left.  They're in Florida now, and chances of visiting are sub-zero.  But the calls are going out.  Things being what they are, I wouldn't expect the other twin, "Dick", to last a year after.
Worse, they'd retired from one of the local industrial plants that went bankrupt.  PBGC protected -- somewhat -- their pensions.  But they'd relied on a $35,000 life insurance policy that was part of that retirement, and it's not certain that they still have it.  Added to that, the wives hadn't been employed much in their lifetimes, and their futures are looking a bit "iffy".
Doesn't help that the women, the one at least, is a determined "JW", meaning "Jehovah Witness", a weird cult that is popular back in that small remote area.  Other wife is a bit more christian, but neither of the twins is, putting it mildly.  So there is that as well.

Extended family is taking it badly.

17So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; and of his brethren, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari their brethren, Ethan the son of Kushaiah;

18And with them their brethren of the second degree, Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed–edom, and Jeiel, the porters.

19So the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were appointed to sound with cymbals of brass;

20And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries on Alamoth;

21And Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed–edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps on the Sheminith to excel.on the…: or, on the eighth to oversee

22And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was for song: he instructed about the song, because he was skilful.was for…: or, was for the carriage: he instructed about the carriagesong: Heb. lifting up

23And Berechiah and Elkanah were doorkeepers for the ark.

24And Shebaniah, and Jehoshaphat, and Nethaneel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, did blow with the trumpets before the ark of God: and Obed–edom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark.

25So David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the Lordout of the house of Obed–edom with joy.

26And it came to pass, when God helped the Levites that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, that they offered seven bullocks and seven rams.

27And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that bare the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the singers: David also had upon him an ephod of linen.song: or, carriage

28Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lordwith shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps.

29And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the Lordcame to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looking out at a window saw king David dancing and playing: and she despised him in her heart.

1st Chronicles 16

1So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it: and they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God.

2And when David had made an end of offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord.

3And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine.

4And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord, and to record, and to thank and praise the LordGod of Israel:

5Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed–edom: and Jeiel with psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals;with psalteries…: Heb. with instruments of psalteries and harps

87They had almost consumed me upon earth; but I forsook not thy precepts.

Romans 12

1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

3For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

4For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:

5So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

6Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;

7Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;

8Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

9Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

10Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

11Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

12Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;

13Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.

14Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.

15Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

16Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

17Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.

18If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

19Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

20Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

21Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
