Today's Readings and Stuff -- Saturday, 07 December 2010

G'day, said in my second-best Aussie accent.    Yes, it's dark out and a bit late to be saying anything but "good evening' or "good night" but whatever.
No snow on the ground, none expected tonight.  Later in the coming week, possibly or probably.  Whatever.

Well, brother-in-law came over today.  And there is a bathtub in our 2nd bathroom.  Caulked and sealed and all.  Not usable yet, no drain yet.  He's planning to come over tomorrow afternoon and crawl into the well named crawl space underneath, and connect the drain.  So at least one more day of the sink/sponge baths.  Getting just a bit old, but it is what it is, and I've certainly done it before and been glad for the opportunity.  So, Lord willing, by this time tomorrow we should at least be able to do a soak. Still have to install the surround panels, etc. and, come the retirement check in another week or two, buy a tension rod to hang a shower curtain and buy the curtain as well.  So perhaps a bit of progress to note.  It'd be nice.

=======================

Today, the completion of the book of Hosea.  This has not been light reading, not the sort of thing that the name it and claim it preachers like to use as a text.  This has been full of judgment and warning, judgment that came to pass and was pretty awful.  All of it over practices and attitudes that seem all too familiar.

Hosea 13

1When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died.
2And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.
3Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.
4Yet I am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.
5I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.
6According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me.
7Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them:
8I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.
9O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.
10I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?
11I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath.
12The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is hid.
13The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.
14I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.
15Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the Lord shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.
16Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

Hosea 14

1O Israel, return unto the Lord thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.
2Take with you words, and turn to the Lord: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips.
3Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.
4I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.
5I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.
6His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon.
7They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.
8Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found.
9Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the Lord are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Friday, 06 Deceember 2019

This is one of those "how did I get here?" days.  All of us have had some experiences that affected us for some time.  Me too.  One of my very earliest memories is of an aunt, Bertha by name, one of my dad's sisters. I can remember seeing her exactly one time.  She was paralyzed and bedridden with polio, occupying a place in grandmother's parlor.  Grandfather had died before I was born.  And an uncle and his wife.  So widowed grandma had a paralyzed daughter to care for, and the two kids of that uncle.  Rough times.  The next time I saw that aunt was a month or so later at her funeral.

All of that was just months after I, all of 4 or 5 years old but the oldest of the kids, and Dad at work and out of reach, had to be the one calling  for help (pre 911 days) as my mom suffered a miscarriage.  Not a pleasant sight, be assured.

See what I mean?  That sort of beginning can, and did, give me a less than sunny and optimistic outlook.  Today is the day that Bertha passed, in 1956.  I remember.  Barely.  Will anyone remember me?

I did get a little bit done today.  I got a piece of plywiid under the computer desk where the desk was bidding to fall through the floor.l  So, for the first time in about a week, I can actually have a real keyboard.
And Wife just got a phone call to the effect that brother-in law will be by tomorrow to, we hope, finish the installation of our bathtub.  It would be most welcome: sink/ sponge baths are getting a bit tiresome.  We shall see.

Hosea 11

1When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
2As they called them, so they went from them: they sacrificed unto Baalim, and burned incense to graven images.
3I taught Ephraim also to go, taking them by their arms; but they knew not that I healed them.
4I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them.
5He shall not return into the land of Egypt, but the Assyrian shall be his king, because they refused to return.
6And the sword shall abide on his cities, and shall consume his branches, and devour them, because of their own counsels.
7And my people are bent to backsliding from me: though they called them to the most High, none at all would exalt him.
8How shall I give thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver thee, Israel? how shall I make thee as Admah? how shall I set thee as Zeboiim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are kindled together.
9I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city.
10They shall walk after the Lord: he shall roar like a lion: when he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.
11They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt, and as a dove out of the land of Assyria: and I will place them in their houses, saith the Lord.
12Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.

Hosea  12

1Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.
2The Lord hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him.
3He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God:
4Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Beth–el, and there he spake with us;
5Even the Lord God of hosts; the Lord is his memorial.
6Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.
7He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loveth to oppress.
8And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.
9And I that am the Lord thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.
10I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets.
11Is there iniquity in Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars are as heaps in the furrows of the fields.
12And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.
13And by a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved.
14Ephraim provoked him to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him.

Revelation 6

1And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.
2And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.
3And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see.
4And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.
5And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
6And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.
7And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.
8And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
9And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
10And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
11And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellowservants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled.
12And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
16And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
17For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

Today's Readings and Stuff. -- Thursday,05 December 2019

Another day.  Pretty much a "caretaker" day, wife doing perhaps a teeny bit better, although that doesn't imply "good".  So she's been pretty mu h horizontal all day.

We got the Word that our short term loan for home repairs will be delayed around 40 days more as some stuff has to happen first.  But we apparently have 1-1/2 sheets of plywood stored in niece's garage yet, so I'll drag them over tomorrow  (Lord willing) and at least get a t ed temporary blockage of the damage in our living room for the nonce.  It's something anyway.

Been thinking for two days about a Christmas Carol.  Never been a favorite, but I started thinking about the words, and the story behind it.  And the implications of that story for them.  We don't really know all the details, but we know they were motivated to make a difficult journey.  They thought it was worth it.  Were they more determined than we?
"We Three Kings" it is.  Ponder the words.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Wednesday, 04 December 2019

Another of "those" days.
We had been scheduled to "watch" the kids next door for an hour or two in the evening while their mom was selling tutus and hair bows at a "craft show" in a nearby town. Until we got a " I need you RIGHT NOW!" call around 3 p.m due to a sudden issue.  And then we had to remain on station until they got home.  We just got home, it's nearly 10:30 p.m. and we're weary.
 I spent time with these passages this morning, some Good Stuff there, but am not at my none-tood-good mode right now.  Added to that, having some equipment issues here, so while I can give the day's text reference, for now I can't do a copy & paste of the texts themselves.  Sorry.

=======
So, that said, today's texts are chapters 7 and 8 in Hosea, and chapter 4 in the Revelation.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Tuesday, 03 December 2019

Another "fun" day.  Wife was up and down several times during the night, mostly due to some of the painful, quite painful, conditions that are part of her life and have been.  So she slept in late, and I tried hard to not disturb that needed rest.  Once she was up and around, and we had broken our fast ( and swilled some coffee of course), I was sent out to pick up a few needed supplies as a very small check had hit the bank so we had the means.  Back home, deal with some issues.  Then we had to jump back in the chariot and run halfway across the county to get a document from our bank to send to the loan company.  Back home, fax the documents off.  Light lunch.  Do some laundry.  Then across the yard to "watch" the kids while their dad at work and their mom at a school parents meeting.  Back home, very late dinner of warmed up leftover vegetable soup.

Fun life, right?

Days like this gobble up the hours, and the matters dealt with are necessary.  I can't believe that this is all there is.  Or should be.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Monday, 02 December 2019

There are just four more Mondays left in the year after today.  Yes, we're that close to the year's end.  This has not been one of the best years that I can recall, am not sure than any further ones will be better, or can be.  In two weeks, Lord willing, I will mark a birthday that will denote my entry into the year that used to be called "threescore and ten".  Not sure what the Lord still has in the works for me, not sure it there is anything. Yes, it's one of those moods.  I've been getting by on the belief that He has a purpose -- possibly more than one -- for my continued presence.  But I just can't see it.

Wife just let me know that tomorrow we need to arrange one of those usurious short-term loans.  Among other things, that will let us give some money to her sister's husband so that he can fix one of their cars, which will in turn let him come over and finish that tub & bathroom project that has been hanging fire for too long.  So we'll float a loan for $150 or so, possibly another 10, which should cover what's needed.  I may take some of that and address another issue:  the sagging floor underneath the computer desk I'm sitting at now.  A year ago, we had a line break to the water heater on the other side of this wall, and we had a follow up of that this last summer.  I suspect that the water leakage, length of which was unknown (we use the room only for rarely-accessed storage), led to severe damage and that has waited until December to make itself known . Just more "fun".

Wiife's been down with something for the last several days.   Running a fever of unknown cause, feeling generally lousy.  She was up to the family gathering for Thanksgiving day, but pretty much horizontal ever since.

I was on "social media" yesterday.  Saw a posting from one of step-daughter's friends from high school.   She and her husband and son live in the same town as step-daughter and her husband.  They had a "thing" over there on Thanksgiving, and people brought their kids.  Photos were taken and "shared".  So I got to see my very first pic of our grand-daughter.  The first and only.  I'm grateful for that, but the situation does not fill me or wife with joy.  Not hardly.  Not quite what I'd envisioned for so many years.  No fun being an "un-person".

And then I heard from my brother's son's wife via the same router.  My brother did not raise his sons in the faith.  But my late father (greatly missed) was a mentor to Tony and to Shannon, enough so that they came to a saving faith, which is wonderful.  They united with the little Mennonite church gathering that I grew up in.  Over time, she became more and more involved in study and writing.  She got in with the local C.S. Lewis group, for example.  Started a blog, does some other things.  And started getting to be more and more involved in the various things in that congregation.  Like lay leadership.  Lately, I noticed that she'd actually been delivering sermons on Sunday mornings.  Her writings revealed more and more frustration with the traditional limitations on women's roles in the church.  Given my recent -- and longer -- experiences with having what I considered to be innocuous comments being turned into A Big Deal, I've kept silence.  Wisely or unwisely, who can say?  But a few days ago she make it known publicly that the disagreements with that congregation and the leadership thereof over this issue has led to her and Tony pulling completely out of that fellowship and breaking all relationships with them.
I am still holding my tongue.  The matter is a contentious one these days and discussions often generatre more heat than light.  I am not supportive of her take on the matter, but she has not asked my opinion. so I'm staying silent (THAT is a miracle!) at least for now.
I have seen this issue become quite heated.  I think it dangerous to deliberately and openly scorn and ignore what I think is pretty clear church doctrine of some 2000 years (or more) duration.  I've seen the lasting effects of doing so.  There is, within that denomination, a "district" in Colorado that, several years ago installed a practicing lesbian as, not "just" a senior pastor, but a district bishop!  We see, if we look, female "pastors" from several denominatins up to their surplices in pro-abortion, pro homosexuality, etc. etc. etc. issues that I believe contravene Scripture and dishonor the Lord and the faith once delivered.
Not sure what to say, if anything.

Today, chapters 3 and 4 in Hosea.

Hosea 3

1Then said the Lord unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.
2So I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer of barley:
3And I said unto her, Thou shalt abide for me many days; thou shalt not play the harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for thee.
4For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim:
5Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; and s

Hosea 4

1Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
3Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
4Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: for thy people are as they that strive with the priest.
5Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.
6My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
7As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame.
8They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity.
9And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings.
10For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the Lord.
11Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart.
12My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.
13They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your spouses shall commit adultery.
14I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall.
15Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah offend; and come not ye unto Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth–aven, nor swear, The Lord liveth.
16For Israel slideth back as a backsliding heifer: now the Lord will feed them as a lamb in a large place.
17Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.
18Their drink is sour: they have committed whoredom continually: her rulers with shame do love, Give ye.
19The wind hath bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Revelation 2

1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;
2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:
3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.
4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
6 But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;
9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;
13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan's seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.
14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.
16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.
17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass;
19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.
20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.
21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.
22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.
23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.
25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come.
26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
28 And I will give him the morning star.
29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
