Today's Readings and Stuff -- Saturday, 23 June 2018

A bit of an "odd" day.
We were pretty done in even after getting home yesterday from Wife's trip off to have "labs"done.
She had a bad night, toss and turn, then, after a few hours, we relocated her to the recliner in the living room.  Less than 2 hours later, she was back.  She finally got to sleep around 04:00.   I had a bad night too, in part due to her issues, in part I wasn't doing all that great either.  I finally went to sleep around 04:30 (or, perhaps, later).  Got a "whole" hour or two.  She got up, so I got up.
I'd planned to go down to the church and help with the semi-annual Cleaning Campaign.  Didn't make it, sorry.  Depending on things, there may be a 2nd effort next Saturday.  We Shall See.
But right now, I feel a lot like an over-used dish rag.  Without any good reason for it, but it's real.

Next-door-Niece and family are off on a weekend getaway.  So I was "volunteered" to take the worthless mutt they have out of the house to "do his business".  Only he didn't want to, and bit my hand!.  Some people love dogs.  I don't.  Never will. This confirms my attitude.  And didn't improve the day.
Wife likes dogs (no accounting for taste) so she went over.  On the 2nd try, she was able to get him outside.  She's welcome to the task.

Today, chapters 5 and 6 of 1st Chronicles.  More family history.

1st Chronicles 5

1  Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn; but, forasmuch as he defiled his father's bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph the son of Israel: and the genealogy is not to be reckoned after the birthright.
2  For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler; but the birthright was Joseph's:)
3  The sons, I say, of Reuben the firstborn of Israel were, Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
4  The sons of Joel; Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son,
5  Micah his son, Reaia his son, Baal his son,
6  Beerah his son, whom Tilgath–pilneser king of Assyria carried away captive: he was prince of the Reubenites.
And his brethren by their families, when the genealogy of their generations was reckoned, were the chief, Jeiel, and Zechariah,
8  And Bela the son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel, who dwelt in Aroer, even unto Nebo and Baal–meon:
And eastward he inhabited unto the entering in of the wilderness from the river Euphrates: because their cattle were multiplied in the land of Gilead.
10  And in the days of Saul they made war with the Hagarites, who fell by their hand: and they dwelt in their tents throughout all the east land of Gilead.
11  And the children of Gad dwelt over against them, in the land of Bashan unto Salecah:
12  Joel the chief, and Shapham the next, and Jaanai, and Shaphat in Bashan.
13  And their brethren of the house of their fathers were, Michael, and Meshullam, and Sheba, and Jorai, and Jachan, and Zia, and Heber, seven.
14  These are the children of Abihail the son of Huri, the son of Jaroah, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jeshishai, the son of Jahdo, the son of Buz;
15  Ahi the son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, chief of the house of their fathers.
16  And they dwelt in Gilead in Bashan, and in her towns, and in all the suburbs of Sharon, upon their borders.
17  All these were reckoned by genealogies in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.
18  The sons of Reuben, and the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh, of valiant men, men able to bear buckler and sword, and to shoot with bow, and skilful in war, were four and forty thousand seven hundred and threescore, that went out to the war.
19  And they made war with the Hagarites, with Jetur, and Naphish, and Nodab.
20  And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand, and all that were with them: for they cried to God in the battle, and he was entreated of them; because they put their trust in him.
21  And they took away their cattle; of their camels fifty thousand, and of sheep two hundred and fifty thousand, and of asses two thousand, and of men an hundred thousand
22  For there fell down many slain, because the war was of God. And they dwelt in their steads until the captivity.
23  And the children of the half tribe of Manasseh dwelt in the land: they increased from Bashan unto Baal–hermon and Senir, and unto mount Hermon.
24  And these were the heads of the house of their fathers, even Epher, and Ishi, and Eliel, and Azriel, and Jeremiah, and Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty men of valour, famous men, and heads of the house of their fathers.
25  And they transgressed against the God of their fathers, and went a whoring after the gods of the people of the land, whom God destroyed before them.
26  And the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgath–pilneser king of Assyria, and he carried them away, even the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, and brought them unto Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, unto this day.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Friday, 22 June 2018

Been a bit of a day already.  Wife has doctor appointment for Monday morning first thing, and was supposed to have some "labs" done in advance.  We'd forgotten that, until yesterday afternoon.  Spent the rest of the afternoon and early evening finding all the misplaced orders for those labs, which we did last evening.  So we were up and about this morning, and off just after 08:00 to a neighboring city, there to have blood draws, etc.
And then back home.  She had to have these labs as "fasting blood work", so no breakfast for her.  I hadn't eaten since lunch yesterday, but my "hunger reflex" hasn't worked since I was a small kid, so it didn't bother me.  We got home and had a late brunch of leftover biscuits.  I have a load in the washer.  Cats are fed.  Kicking back just a bit: been a rainy day, we drove through some very heavy downpours, particularly en route home.  Will be an "indoor day".
Next-door great-niece has some sort of a "recital" at a nearby (Buhl) park for 1:00 p.m. Sunday.  I resent that they schedule things in such a way, but it is what it is.  So I intend to attend worship services Sunday, duck out a few minutes early perhaps, and make the commute.  At least it wasn't one of those kids' baseball games set for 10:00 Sunday.

As you may note, the Bible passages have a bit of a different arrangement.  I copy these passages from a number of web sites, some work better than others.  So, as seen below, there are sections  with section headings.  I have similar descriptive headings in some of my Bibles, but they are not  part of the original text.

Today, verses 49-56 of Psalm 119

×–
ZAIN.

49Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.
50This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.
51The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy law.
52I remembered thy judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself.
53Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law.
54Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.
55I have remembered thy name, O LORD, in the night, and have kept thy law.
56This I had, because I kept thy precepts.

Today, chapter 8 in the Epistle to the Romans.  This is another of those passages that one could study on for a year.  Doubt that?  Look.  Try verses 35-39, for example.  Well, verse 31 also.  And, 14.  And ...  well, see what I mean? Not to mention verse 1 of course.
Read this.  Carefully.  Meditate on it.  Read it again.

Romans 8

1  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
12Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
18For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. 20For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, 21Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. 23And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. 24For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? 25But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
26Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
28And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
31What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 34Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Thursday, 21 June 2018 late

This was mostly written on Thursday, and intended for publication in the late afternoon/early evening.  Some unexpected things came up, which occupied us fully, and the "later" trasnformed into the "oops!" all too readily.  My apologies.

Today, a change to the Chronicles.
This is the sort of genealogy that causes many of us to get glazed eyes and skip over.  Admit it, I do.  People with weird names, living long ago in places far from here, and those places also had weird names.  Nonetheless, they were real people, as real as you and I.  And the world we inhabit is, to a great extent, what it is because of those people, long ago.
I get some "social media" and other special interest communications, from those who are interested in their own family genealogies.  I think we all see the TV, etc. ads from operations who purport to use a DNA sample to provide details of one's family heritage.  And, of course, to our shame, we see the marketing of similar products to provide proof of parentage in instances where the name of one's parents, normally the father, is in grave doubt.  Here, at least at the time of writing, one could trace one's family roots back to Adam.  Not so bad.
And, given the tribal structure of the time, it was important.  Some tribes had particular assignments for work, notably the Levites, with specific assignments within that tribe.  Certain tribes had regions assigned to them.  Marriage was to be within the tribe, not outside the tribe and certainly not with the heathens in the surrounding areas.
It's not totally restricted to that area.  One name in my own family's history is "Miller".  Guess what that implied?  Yes, a family of those that operated mills, probably wind-powered or water-wheel  powered, like those of my Dutch ancestors from what we now call the Netherlands.  Such things are not all that unusual, at one time only the nobility, etc., had what we now call surnames.  So someone might be known as Joseph the miller, which might in time be taken as Joseph Miller.
These records mean something.  And, as we see in the Gospels, Jesus'  earthly genealogy hooks into this one.

Psalm 119, verses 41-48

VAU.

41  Let thy mercies come also unto me, O Lord, even thy salvation, according to thy word.
42  So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word.
43  And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments.
44  So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever.
45  And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts.
46  I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed.
47  And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.
48  My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.

Romans 7

1  Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
2  For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
3  So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.
5  For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.
6  But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
7  What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8  But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
9  For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
10  And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
11  For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
12  Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
13  Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
14  For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15  For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
16  If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
17  Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
18  For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
19  For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
20  Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21  I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
22  For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23  But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
24  O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25  I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
