Today's Readings and Stuff -- Saturday, 05 August 2017

BAD storms last evening and night.  Lots of people around here still without power, and some may not have power back until nearly midnight tonight.    Might possibly get all the way up to 71° today.  Might.  Possibly.  All of 63° here now. 
We were scheduled to take an hour drive to see one of my oldest friends in the whole world.  But she's been sick all night and all morning, the car continues to overheat, and I'm not all that chipper myself.  So I just called his phone and left word we're not up to it, and left a message on his wife's FaceBook messenger. 
Wife's under a cat and two blankets now, which sounds pretty sensible to me.  Might do likewise in a bit.  We shall see.
So this will be brief.  There are some things heavy on my mind, several of them yet unresolved, others just giving an unclear picture.  More later, perhaps.

Haven't gotten the body count yet from last night's Friday Night Frivolities.  Usually pretty high.  The preferences for use of vast quantities of alcohol, various "recreational pharmaceuticals", etc,. combined with the "drunk driving olympics", and preferences for settling fairly trivial disagreements with various means of deadly force, lead to bad ends.  It would be foolish to expect otherwise, but it always seems to surprise some.

Our reading in the Old Testament is Psalms 75, 76, and 77

Psalm 75

1 Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare. 2 When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly. 3 The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Psalm 76

Psalm 77

The reading in the New Testament today is chapter 6 in the Epistle to the Romans.
As is the case throughout this epistle, we could, and should, chew over every word in every verse, and not exhaust it.  This is Good Stuff.

Romans 6

1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7 For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? Today's Readings and Stuff -- Friday, 04 August 2017

Happy Friday to all.
That used to mean something.  At one time, back in the 1980's, I worked in a division of General Motors, a role in the Process Engineering department.  We were required to wear a tie every day.  Required.  Eventually, the adopted a "casual Friday" rule, which meant that we were allowed to wear polo shirts, no ties.  No jeans, of course, but more casual clothes.  So "happy Friday" had some meaning.  Not that we never worked Saturdays of course, I frequently did, particularly when I had a major project running and had people working on installation stuff, etc. on Saturday.  But I also got paid for it.  Made it worthwhile.  And on Saturday, I could wear jeans, and normally did.
Changes.

Wife is in some pain this morning, foot and leg all swollen, visible bruising for no apparent reason.  So she's in recliner, with footrest up and pillows on top of that,. and a cat on her lap for comfort.  He seems to sense that she is hurting.  I just put some topical stuff on with aspercreme and lidocaine, it seems to help with the pain.

I was scheduled to go over across the state line on Sunday afternoon to a family reunion, my mother's mother's family.  I was at one two years ago, the first such in some 40 years.  But given wife's condition and the car problems we continue to experience, I'm sending word over that I won't be able to attend.  Doubt that I'll be missed.  Lot of that going around.

Our Old Testament reading today is Psalms 73 and 74.  These are attributed to Asaph, one of the worship leaders assigned by David.
Ever feel like you understand Psalm 74?  Ever feel that even the Lord Himself has thrown you to the curb?  Ever feel abandoned, unloved, unlamented, unworthy, worthless, hopeless?  You aren't the first, you won't be the last.  Yet there is hope, no matter how dark the day, how hopeless the situation.  His name is Jesus.  Asaph didn't know that.  We don't have that excuse.

Psalm 73

1 Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart. 2 But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped. 3 For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. 4 For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. 5 They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. 6 Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment. 7 Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish. 8 They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily. 9 They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth. 10 Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them. 11 And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? 12 Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches. 13 Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency. 14 For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning. 15 If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children. 16 When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me; 17 Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. 18 Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction. 19 How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors. 20 As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image. 21 Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins. 22 So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee. 23 Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. 24 Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. 25 Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. 26 My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever. 27 For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee. 28 But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.

Psalm 74

The New Testament reading is chapter 5 in the Epistle to the Romans.
Justification, salvation by  faith alone in Christ alone, is the radical message of our faith.  This chapter deserves a careful verse-by-verse examination every day.

Romans 5

1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. 15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. Today's Readings and Stuff -- Thursday, 03 2017

Happy Thursday to all.
The weathercasters last night and even early this morning were confidently predicting heavy thunderstorms here today.  Later, that was pushed back to begin at 3 p.m.  But they missed us by a fair amount.  I don't want to be too snarky, but it's people like that who loudly predict the temperature of the entire earth 80 - 100 years from now.  Forgive me if I am a bit skeptical.
As I compose this, I am seeing a temperature range within a 30 mile radius between 87.1° N and 73.6°.  Which will be recorded?

Our readings in the Old Testament are Psalms 70, 71, and 72.
Now, Psalm 72 ends with the line The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.  Well, the collection of the Psalms includes quite a few attributed to David, and those attributed to  him are not in one lump.  Those thought or known to be attributed to David are Psalms 2-9, 11-41. 51-65, 68-70, 86, 95, 101, 103, 108-110, 122, 124, 131, 133, 138-145.   Moses is credited with Psalm 90.  The authorship of 48 of the Psalms is unknown.

Psalm 70

1 MAKE HASTE, O GOD, TO DELIVER ME; MAKE HASTE TO HELP ME, O LORD. 2 Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul: let them be turned backward, and put to confusion, that desire my hurt. 3 Let them be turned back for a reward of their shame that say, Aha, aha. 4 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified. 5 But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer; O LORD, make no tarrying.

Psalm 71

Psalm 72

The reading in the New Testament is chapter 4 of the Epistle to the Romans.  Justification by faith.  VERY important!

Romans 4

1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. 6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, 7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. 9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. 10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: 12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. 13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: 15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. 16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. 18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. 19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb: 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. 23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; 24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Wednesday, 02 August 2017

Trying to get back on track today.
One of the side effects of advancing years is that I have whole lot less hair on top of my head than has been the case in years past.  And -- probably to the horror of my Amish relatives -- I never acquired the habit of wearing a hat.  Combine that with about 11 hours of working outside in yesterday's sun, and I have a sunburn on the scalp.  Doesn't hurt (itches) but when I happened to look in the bathroom mirror, it shows up.  But I'm alive to see it.

The reading in the Old Testament today is Psalms 68 and 69.
There is frequent mention, here and elsewhere in Scripture, of the land of Bashan.  It had as its western boundary the Jordan River (at least that is one theory) and at least part of it was given to the half-tribe of Manasseh (see Joshua 13:29-31).  So I would think it included much of what is now called the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.  More here if one is interested.

The New Testament passage here is chapter 3 in the Epistle to the Romans.
There are several verses here that you could make a book or a sermon from.  Doubt it?  Look at verse 23, for example.   

23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 

 OK?
How about verse 18?  Does it sound like the way the "elites" talk, the professors in the universities (including some seminaries) or the media figures or the politicians?  Or, frankly, your neighbors?

18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.

 Some things haven't changed, really.  It's the basic sin nature of the human.

This was to have gone out yesterday morning.  I was even starting on it.  Then, my helper (ok, the family friend who was going to do the most of the work) showed up to get started on the re-coating of our leaky roof.  He's working for free (my, do I appreciate that!) and doing the parts that I don't think I can do any longer, the part about actually being up on that roof of our 25-year-old mobile home (we're poor these days, ok?) without either falling off or falling through.  These things aren't built like castles. So we spent the rest of the day, until early evening, with him on roof and me stirring buckets of the coating and hauling workable amounts up and down ladders in less-than-safe conditions.  He finally tired and departed, the light was starting to go, and we cleaned up and came inside.  I hit the shower and then the bed and just got up 90 minutes ago.  Will attempt to get caught up.

Running late on everything the last several days.  Perhaps tomorrow will be better.

Today is the last day in the month of July.  Lord willing, the calendar turns to August tonight.

Lord willing, tomorrow I have a friend coming by to help me apply some sealer to our leaky roof.  Dear Wife was able to locate and to acquire two 5-gallon buckets of some aluminized asphalt roof sealer.  List prices of this stuff can be as much as $95/ bucket, she was able to acquire them for less than a quarter of that.  I have to run out in a bit and buy a couple of the brushes (look like driveway brooms to me) that are needed to do the application.  He's lighter than I (and 15 years younger) so is probably a better choice for going up onto the ridge line of the roof.  We have a gap in the existing coverage there, a visible gap, which is Not A Good Thing.  We're hoping that it's a recent development and hasn't led to structural issues.  We hope. 

We've been overwhelmed with an avalanche of matters that are not tremendously important but are urgent (at least Wife thinks so) and which devour enormous amounts of time, attention, and energy. Which have eaten up the last 48-60 hours.  We got through it all, though I'm not sure that we have a whole lot to show for it, but we made it through.  More than that, I am reluctant to say.
I do find myself longing for an old-style "all day singing and dinner on the grounds" event.  With singing like this for example.

Yet in the midst of all this scurrying around and "busywork" etc., I  had a song in mind, and the memorable phrase from it ringing loud.  The song is "Like  A River Glorious", with the wonderful phrase, "stayed upon Jehovah ".    More completely,

Stayed upon Jehovah,

Hearts are fully blessed;

Finding as He promised,

Perfect peace and rest.

That's pretty good, isn't it?  If we are truly stayed upon Him, then no matter what the storms of life, all the busyness that threatens to divert our focus, falls into its proper place and is viewed with the proper perspective on things.
And made possible by Him.  But we have to want it, to earnestly desire it.

Our reading this morning takes us into a new adventure.  Chapter 1 of the Epistle to the Romans.
Every verse, every phrase, every word of this is important.
Some years ago, I was given a study Bible for Christmas.  The commentator noted a story of a pastor and Bible teacher.  That person had stepped into the pulpit one Sunday, and his text was verse 1 of Romans 1.   Period.  The next Sunday, the text was Romans chapter 1 verse 2, and he didn't quite finish it.  The third week, he completed verse 2 and began verse 3.  And so it continue for some 3-1/2 YEARS!  NEVER leaving the Epistle to the Romans.  And, in that time, the church exploded!  They ran  out of room to hold all those worshiping and hearing the Word of God!
That is how significant this work is.
I am not nearly so gifted, nor called to preach.  And for purposes of this blog, we'll  have to go through more quickly.  But I earnestly entreat anyone who comes by to treat this text reverently and attentively.  The Lord is speaking to us, to all of us, through it.  Treat  it accordingly. 

Romans 1

1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, 2 (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) 3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; 4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: 5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name: 6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ: 7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ. 8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. 9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; 10 Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you. 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; 12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. 13 Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. 14 I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise. 15 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
