Today's Readings and Stuff -- Thursday, 26 September 2019

Getting late into the week.  Late in the month too, a week from now will be into October.  Ick!  So we're late into the year.  And that causes all sorts of end-of-year memories to come in.  Twenty years ago, we were living in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, living in the house we'd purchased a few years previous.  My lovely wife, two beautiful and quite intelligent daughters, and the single cat that I'd been wheedled into allowing.  Working, making a pretty good buck, for the "Most Admired Corporation In America" as surveys had stated.  Not bad.  But, first our division and then the rest of the company, were sold to a "slash & burn" type outfit, and they started firing my bosses and co-workers.  Didn't look good.  So, in mid-October, I accepted a position in another state, tendered my resignation, and we prepared a relocation.
Twenty years later, we've moved across state lines four times.  Some of those employers are out of business and empty buildings, others have turned into something unrecognizable.  Both those daughters, dearly beloved, are far from us in every sense of the word and refuse contact.  The jobs are gone, the health is gone, the money is all gone.
Hard to avoid being depressed.
But I believe, as I have believed throughout, that there is some purpose to all of this and that we were being prepared for whatever is yet to come.  So we shall see.  I do confess that I'd prefer it without the cold and snow that is in our near future.

Now, Wife is feeling a teeny bit better.  Believe me, that is a wonderful thing to be able to say.  Thank  You Lord!

Isaiah 53

53 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

Isaiah 54

54 Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the Lord.

2 Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;

3 For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.

Today's Readings and Stuff -- Wednesday, 25 September 2019

Late again, sorry.

Wife is -- Thank You Lord! -- doing some better.  Not great, but a bit better.  Whether she's getting past whatever thing or combination of things that are part of her "normal" struggles I can't say.  Possibly.  But we'd both had a flu shot, supposedly not a live virus, at our doctor appointment last week and it is possible that it upset her delicate bodily balances.  Not sure.  Should know more by the weekend, and perhaps sooner.  We are on tap to  "watch" the great-nephew Friday evening for several hours, so that will be a benchmark.  And Niece is set to start her new job on Monday morning, so again that will tell us something.  I haven't been 100% myself, but I have to keep going, so I will.

I've  had a continuous run of songs repeating in my head since before I woke up. Several categories and I'm not sure how all of them connect, but I suspect that they all do, somehow.

Like, for example, remember what we used to call "camp songs"?  I was fortunate to be able to attend a week-long church camp several times when I was just turning 11-12 or so (Laurelville, PA, and I don't know if it is still there, as it's been quite a while).  One of the standard ones was "I've Got A Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy, down in my heart".  Not generally what you hear in Sunday services, but it was fun and enthusiastic and it had a message.   

Or two that connect in my mind, one that we sang growing up and still in many hymnals though rarely used, for reasons I do not know.  Let The Lower Lights Be Burning.  But that put me in mind of one that's sometimes part of gospel sings and presented by various groups, The Lighthouse.  The latter one should precede the Lower Lights, but each can stand on its own.  And there is a message there, a reminder of the duty that we each has to be part of the outreach to those mired in darkness and the storms of life.

And, then, in my mind all day long, Close To Thee.  I only came across this fairly recently, don't remember it from the past, but it's rapidly becoming a favorite.  Another Fanny Crosby, by the way

Isaiah 51

12But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

13For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

14And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

15Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
