Today's Reading 30 August 2008

Happy Saturday and 1st day of, for some of us anyway, a 3-day weekend. Unfortunately, that ''some of us'' does not include Dear Wife. She worked yesterday until 8:00 last night, and had to be back at 05:00 this morning, so the alarm went off before 04:00, of course. And yours truly got up too, it would be awful to have to work such a schedule and then have spouse snoozing through it all. We've been through quite a lot in our near-20 years together, and even I know better than to do that. So, on a day off, I'm watching the sun come up, with some music in the background. For obvious reasons, it was a short night, and having 3 cats decide that around 01:00 in the morning is a fine time to romp on our bed and over us. well, it did not improve that. Evil creatures, these cats. Can't even skin them and make a decent-sized coat. And, as it is, I can hear the washing machine churning away with the comforter in, seems we have acquired a bit of ''pet odor'' in it.

This morning's reading is Psalms 142. 143, and 144. We are coming close to the end of the Psalms, only a few more days. I hope you enjoy the tour. There is some good theology here, and some heartfelt prayers that resonate with us. Some of these are like the prayers of a person who has come unto the Lord in desperate circumstances. Been there.
And some of them are little taught in some churches. I grew up in a branch of the Mennonite Church, a denomination that takes strict non-violence as foundational and pretty much a requirement for getting into Heaven. I don't recall EVER, not even one time, any mention of Psalm 144. Not as a whole, at least, perhaps a passing mention of the final verse. Perhaps. The rest of it, well, it just was a matter best avoided, or, if that was not possible, then relegated to the ''that was then but we are wiser/better/smarter/holier than they were then''. OK, fine.

Psalm 142
1 I cried unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication.
2 I poured out my complaint before him; I shewed before him my trouble.
3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.
4 I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.
5 I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.
6 Attend unto my cry; for I am brought very low: deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.
7 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.


Psalm 143
1 Hear my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.
2 And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.
3 For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead.
4 Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.
5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands.
6 I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.
7 Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.
8 Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

Psalm 144
1 Blessed be the LORD my strength which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:
2 My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.
3 LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!
4 Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.
5 Bow thy heavens, O LORD, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.
6 Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.

This evening's reading is verses 14 through 33 of chapter 10 of First Corinthians. More instruction on living out our faith.
I Corinthians 10:14-33
14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
15 I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.
16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.
18 Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?
19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

Today's Reading 29 Augist 2008 -- Updated

Short shrift today. Yesterday I got to work at around 06:15, and got home last night after 9:00. A very short night and another long nasty day today. Will try to update this if time permits later, but for now, this is all I can do.

Today was long, but not so long as yesterday's 15 hour or so marathon. After that, 11 hours is nothing. Though it still was not that great. Putting in the hours itself isn't bad. It's putting in the hours and knowing very well that it has accomplished not one single worthy thing, that makes it hard.
On the other hand, ...... part of what I had to do last night was to make an unscheduled 30-some mile trip to a customer's facility for reasons beyond the scope of this post. It was a fool's errand, and I knew it at the time. Yet, I found that God had put someone, someone there I did not know, in my path for me to talk to. The guy needed someone like me to be there at just that time. So, the trip, while a worthless exercise from a business standpoint, had some potential for Kingdom work. Funny how that happens, isn't it?

This morning Psalms 139, 140, and 141
If you are not familiar with Psalm 139, I urge you to remedy that. This is truly one of my favorites, one that has been a familiar friend, one that has expressed my longings sometimes better than I could have done. This is written by someone who has been there.

Psalm 139
1 O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.
2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.
9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;
10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.

Psalm 140
1 Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;
2 Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.
3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.
4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.
5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.
6 I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.
7 O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.
8 Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.
9 As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

Psalm 141
1 Lord, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee.
2 Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.
4 Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties.
5 Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities.
6 When their judges are overthrown in stony places, they shall hear my words; for they are sweet.
7 Our bones are scattered at the grave's mouth, as when one cutteth and cleaveth wood upon the earth.
8 But mine eyes are unto thee, O GOD the Lord: in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute.

Today's Reading 28 August 2008

A wonderful Thursday morning to everyone. The work week, the so-called ''normal'' work week, is now more than half gone. Not over, but well under way. I for one have not made that much a dent in my 'goals and objectives' for the week, or the 'to-do's', and certainly have not made the best use of the time granted me. My fault. Perhaps, just perhaps, we'll do better today.

Today's Reading 27 August 2008

Happy Wednesday to all and sundry. Midweek day. I was reminded that our 20th wedding anniversary will be in just 2 weeks. It has been a good run. The Lord surely put us together in the most improbable of circumstances, at a time that neither of us was looking, both of us having concluded that we would go through life alone. Wrong. He had other plans for us. That meeting was nearly 22 years ago now, we dated for more than a year before I proposed, fearfully. Then about a six month engagement period. Twenty years of good memories and real miracles, and it seems like it has flashed by. I love her more today than I did back then. She really is my one true love. God is good.

This morning's reading is Psalms 132, 133, 134, and 135.

Psalm 132
1 Lord, remember David, and all his afflictions:
2 How he sware unto the LORD, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob;
3 Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;
4 I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids,
5 Until I find out a place for the LORD, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.
6 Lo, we heard of it at Ephratah: we found it in the fields of the wood.
7 We will go into his tabernacles: we will worship at his footstool.
8 Arise, O LORD, into thy rest; thou, and the ark of thy strength.

This evening's reading is chapter 8 of Paul's First letter to the Corinthians.
I Corinthians 8
1 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
2 And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
3 But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
7 Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
8 But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of your's become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
13 Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.

Today's Reading 26 August 2008

Good Tuesday morning. We're still feeling the effects of Tropical Storm Fay here, the tornado sirens were going off again today in several parts of our area, for the 3rd straight day, and it rained much of the day. Again. Last year,we were in a drought, and at this time of year were more than 14 inches below the normal rainfall for the year. This year had been dry, though not so severe, and we were not quite 5 inches below normal, up until a few days ago. That deficit is now basically gone. One might wish that the year's deficit hadn't all been made up in a couple of days, but that is one of those things that's in God's hands. He knows what He's doing. So we'll enjoy the 'liquid sunshine''. And it makes for good sleeping weather.

Want again to draw your attention to the mission to the Ukraine that I mentioned Sunday. This really is an impressive effort, and one that you might well prayerfully consider supporting financially and even with your own involvement. Want to make a difference that can have eternal consequences? Here's a way.

This morning's reading is Psalms 128 - 131. These are short, very short. Quite a change from Psalm 119. But short does not mean trivial. Not at all.

Psalm 128
1 Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.
2 For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.
3 Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.
4 Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.
5 The LORD shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.
6 Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children, and peace upon Israel.


Psalm 129
1 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:
2 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.
4 The LORD is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.
5 Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.
6 Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:
7 Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.
8 Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the LORD be upon you: we bless you in the name of the LORD.


Psalm 130
1 Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD.
2 Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.
3 If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?
4 But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.
5 I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.
6 My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.
7 Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.
8 And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.


Psalm 131
1 Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.
2 Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.
3 Let Israel hope in the LORD from henceforth and for ever.

This evening's New Testament reading is verses 25 through 49 of the 7th chapter of Paul's 1st letter to the Corinthians.

25 Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of the Lord: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.

Today's Reading 25 August 2008

Monday again. Back to the work week. Look at it, not only as a means for earning a living, but also that it is the place of ministry that the Lord has provided for us to do His work.

This morning's reading is Psalms 124 - 127. Good. Short. Memorable.

Psalm 124
1 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;
2 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:
3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:
4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:
5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
6 Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.


Psalm 125
1 They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.
2 As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.
3 For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity.
4 Do good, O LORD, unto those that be good, and to them that are upright in their hearts.

Psalm 126

Psalm 127

Another entry on the contacts list

We were greatly blessed this morning to have missionaries speaking at our tiny church. Let me introduce Tom and Larissa Benz. Tom, actually Rev. Benz, alternates between mission activities in Ukraine, and operation of a Christian retreat in central Alabama.
He and Larissa spoke, and so did a guest, a Ukrainian linguist and translator with them, Tanya whose last name is, I believe, Tkachenko. They were able to share with us some of the issues and struggles in their ministry to orphan children and teens in Ukraine. Some of the kids are Ukrainian but most are Russian. Some are even Muslims. All are orphans. This ministry is an opening to proclaim Jesus Christ and the love of God to kids who may never have experience love before, and certainly may never have known of Jesus.

And blessed Sunday has come at last. I need this. No matter what we do in our daily practice of prayer, devotions, study, and whatever else we have found to be needful, the gathering together in prayer, praise, study, and the proclamation of God's Word is something we need. I certainly do.

Saturday was a quiet day to rest up from the week, hoping to get a bit of an extra charge for a heavy week that's coming at me. It rained most of the day, causing the cats to spend most of their time snoozing around. Of course, that generally means that their batteries are all charged up around the time we head for bed, and they want us to wake up at 01:00 in the morning and romp with them. I have, so far, resisted the enormous temptation to give them ''flying lessons'' but that day may be approaching.

Dear Wife, the love of my life, has to be at work at 05:00 on Sundays (those of you who think nothing of stopping at a restaurant for your on-the-way-to-church breakfast might give some thought to the fact that your practice means that other people, those who personally would prefer to be in the pew in front of you, have to work. Believe me, we know.). And, as a result, I will be off the church alone, teaching a lesson about living confidently as believers, missing the woman I love.

This morning's reading is Psalms 120, 121, 122, and 123.

Psalm 120
1 In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and he heard me.
2 Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.
3 What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?
4 Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.
5 Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!
6 My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace.
7 I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.


Psalm 121
1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

Psalm 123
1 Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.
2 Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.
3 Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
4 Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

This evening's reading is chapter 6 of the 1st letter to the Corinthians. There is a lot here and I won't touch on all of it. But the points in the first few verses deserve some attention. I am perhaps over-sensitive on this one, but there is a church not very far, perhaps 2 miles, from where I now sit, that ended up in a worldly court battle over money and assets and other matters. Played out in public, in the newspapers, in the courts. Giving a terrible testimony of the Body of Christ. We are expected to do better than that. The local case is only one of several, many of us know of others. Has no one read these passages, or paid them the least attention?

While yesterday's reading made some strong points about church discipline and the behavior and daily habits of Christians and slapped down those who then, and now, want to live a wicked lifestyle while claiming freedom under Grace to live as they wish. While Paul continues some of that here, today, we see some of the 'on the other hand' of that in this section. I have seen some churches where every wrong thing you did (or your father or grandfather or uncle) even back to elementary school, will be held against you forever. And positions of leadership are reserved for those who feel themselves to have on their own merits achieved sanctity. Or who hope that others don't know what they once were like. We once had a pastor in east Tennessee, who would preach on this passage, particularly the first clause in verse 11, and few do. For some reason. It is wise to reflect on what He has done for us. By the way, I note that some of the behavior he is talking about is not only tolerated in all too many churches, but actually celebrated in a few, and such offenders are placed in positions of honor. Not good.
I Corinthians 6
1 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?
2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?
4 If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.
5 I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?
6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers.
7 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?
8 Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.
9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
14 And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
