Today's Readings -- 16 August 2010

I see by the calendar that we are now just passing the half way point of the month of August, meaning that September is nearing. When I was a kid, half an age ago in eastern Ohio, school started the day after Labor Day in early September. Here, the kids started last week. Either way, it means that in some ways Summer is over. And yes, I know that does not officially happen for more than a month yet, and yes, I know that temperatures here remain in the mid-90's this week. But the 3rd quarter of the year is half over, and I have few high points to be proud of. Not a good feeling.
And yet ....
Had something interesting happen yesterday. As some know, I am deeply privileged to lead a Bible study group on Sunday mornings. It is in many ways the high point of my week. We were in 2nd Corinthians chapter 5. I was really emphasizing to the group the importance of verse 17, "if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation....", the transforming work of the Lord. It's a matter of great import. OK. Then class ends, and we are in the sanctuary, and Pastor Josh is preaching from Romans 12:1, 2 -- and what is he emphasizing? Transformation. Interesting, huh? He didn't know what I'd be teaching, and I didn't know what he'd be preaching. Matter of fact, he told me when I talked to him that he hadn't known that would be the topic until just a day or so before, he'd actually been planning something quite different.


This morning's reading is Psalms 105 and 106

Psalm 105

1	O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.
2	Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works.
3	Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD.
4	Seek the LORD, and his strength: seek his face evermore.
5	Remember his marvellous works that he hath done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;
6	O ye seed of Abraham his servant, ye children of Jacob his chosen.
7	He is the LORD our God: his judgments are in all the earth.

Psalm 106

1	Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

3	Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.
4	Remember me, O LORD, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation;

This evening, verses 1-20 of Romans 15

Romans 15:1-20

1	We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.
2	Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.
3	For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
4	For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
5	Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
6	That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7	Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.

Today's Readings -- 15 August 2010

The Lord's Day. I've needed this all week, and perhaps you have as well.
This has not been, by objective standards, a bad week. Been worse ones, often. Yet it has left me feeling hollow and dry inside. Happens when you try to plod through on your own power alone. Can't do it, at least not for long, and not to good effect. While we made it through, sort of, it would take a great amount of self delusion to to think we accomplished more than bare survival. If nothing else, I believe that the Lord has us placed for more than that.

This morning's reading is Psalms 103 and 104. Psalm 103 is another of those old friends, one of those that, when I turn to it, find it expresses what I wish I had said myself, and does it better. "Bless the Lord, oh my soul".

Psalm 103

1	Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
2	Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
3	Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
4	Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
5	Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.
6	The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.
7	He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.
8	The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.
9	He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.
10	He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11	For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.

Psalm 104

This evening, Romans 14. Been involved in church disputes? I have, I grew up in a denomination famous for them. It is, in part, why I walked away so many years ago. And was not alone in that. It took many years for me to realize that walking away from a disputatious situation is one thing, using that to run away from the Lord is another matter entirely. He never gave up on me, for which I am eternally grateful. But such things are found throughout the world and are not useful for building the Body.

Romans 14

1	Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.
2	For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
3	Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.
4	Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.
5	One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
6	He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
7	For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.

Today's Readings -- 14 August 2010

I hope it has been a good Saturday for all. We had plans for the day, and did some of them. But neither of us has been feeling good lately, and we had on-and-off storms, some rather substantial, come through the area throughout the day. Puts a damper on lawn-mowing (particularly with our electric lawn mower, don't ask), and the long-overdue outdoor carpentry I had planeed This Weekend For Sure. And the Powers That Be are making noise about requiring me to work -- unpaid, as usual -- this coming Saturday, meaning such things are unlikely to get done then either.
Anyway, we tried to catch up on some sleep, and made some headway along those lines.

Today's Old Testament portion is Psalms 99, 100, 101, 102. These are not long, and they're good. Psalm 100 is one of those we were "encouraged" to commit to memory as kids, and it has been a favorite of mine. I recommend the practice.

Psalm 99

1	The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.
2	The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people.
3	Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy.
4	The king's strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob.
5	Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.
6	Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them.
7	He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them.
8	Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.
9	Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.

Psalm 100

1	Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
2	Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
3	Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4	Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
5	For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Psalm 101

1	I will sing of mercy and judgment: unto thee, O LORD, will I sing.
2	I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.
3	I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.
4	A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person.
5	Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I cut off: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer.

The New Testament passage is Romans 13. I particularly want to draw attention to the final few verses.

Romans 13

1	Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
2	Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
3	For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
4	For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
5	Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
6	For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
7	Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
8	Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

10	Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
11	And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

13	Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

Today's Readings -- 13 August 2010

Happy Friday! Perhaps this can be a good day. Let us try.

This morning, Psalms 96, 97, 98. These are psalms of praise, and you may recognize some of the phrases: some have been copied into our more modern hymnals. And why not!

Psalm 96

1	O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.
2	Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.
3	Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.
4	For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.
5	For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.
6	Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7	Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength.
8	Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts.
9	O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.
10	Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously.
11	Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof.
12	Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice
13	Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

Psalm 97

1	The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.
2	Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.
3	A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.
4	His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.
5	The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
6	The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.
7	Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.
8	Zion heard, and was glad; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O LORD.
9	For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.
10	Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.
11	Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.
12	Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

Psalm 98

1	O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.
2	The LORD hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.
3	He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
4	Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.
5	Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.
6	With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King.
7	Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
8	Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together
9	Before the LORD; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.

This evening, Romans 12. We could spend a month or more just on this. Perhaps one of these times we will. This is good doctrine, right from the start. This is how to live the Christian life.

Romans 12

1	I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2	And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
3	For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
4	For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:
5	So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
6	Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
7	Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
8	Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
9	Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
10	Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
11	Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
12	Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
13	Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.
14	Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
15	Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
16	Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
17	Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
18	If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
19	Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
20	Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
21	Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
