A Good Day, a Day of Remembrance

I attended the 60th Homecoming at a small church on the outskirts of Montgomery. They called it a Homecoming, and it was, but it was also a celebration of the anniversary of the establishment of this particular congregation. I was honored and glad to be present.

There were a few presentations made - one couple shown here, Harold and Betty, have served the Lord in that little congregation since 1967. To quote the plaque given them, '' ... their service has included Deacon, Sunday School Director, Executinve Messengers, Nursery, Preschool Sunday School Teacher, Adult Sunday School Teacher, Treasurer, and Assistant Treasurer.''
Clearly, they didn't do this for 40 years for a small wooden plaque, a brief round of applause, and a corsage. They did it, like so many others do, out of love for the Lord and obedience to His call on their lives. I can not say I know them well, but in the brief period I have, they have been a treasure.

Another such presentation was made to Tommy and Ann. They have served in that tiny church since 1980. In 27 years, again quoting from the award , '' .... they have served in the areas of Deacon, Training Union Director, Training Union Teacher, Minister of Music, Sunday School Director, Nursery, Preschool Teacher, Elementary Teacher, Preteen Teacher, Secretary, and Assistant Treasurer.''
That's quite a lot, and they have carried it well.

Now, the churches around the world are often served, and well, by great and godly pastors, preachers, teachers, and evangelists. We thank the Lord for them. but for every one of them, there are dozens just like these two couples, who serve in a variety of roles in order to accomplish the Lord's work. Any of them will tell you that it has been a blessing to them to be part of it. Any any of them, including those like them in YOUR church, will probably admit that there have been times of trial and frustration and uncertainty. Times when the other people of faith haven't acted much like it.
I am deeply honored to have known these saints.
