Today's Readings and Stuff -- Friday, 08 September 2017

I believe we made it up all the way to 65° today.  Huzzah or something like that.  I can't complain over-much, not after watching the weather radar and projected tracks of the THREE hurricanes menacing the US and busily tearing up things, including causing deaths, in the  Atlantic near the Caribbean.  We have, as I've noted before, more than a few friends and family and quasi-family in the target zone.  (that quasi-family notes that, among others, there are a few ladies there whose father was a friend of mine dating to the mid-1970's, and who grew up considering me to be an honorary big brother to them).  So the matter is not remote, not to us. Several of those persons, for several reasons, have had to "ride it out".  One is an official with the electric company down there, and will be needed immediately after the storm passes, in order to get the power back on for 3/4 of the state.  Another is a nurse, so will be in high demand.  Others have things that just prevent their going.  So we have them in our hearts and prayers, along with everyone else.

Sunday is our wedding anniversary, number 29.  We long ago lost track of the minister who performed the ceremony for us, at a time when we were members of no churches.  A nice and kindly fellow, pastor in the Nazarene church in this area, who gave us good counsel and we appreciated him.  I don't think he was pleased when some of our "friends" decided to make the cake & cookies time at a pavilion we'd rented for afterwards more entertaining, and brought (and consumed) large amounts of booze.  WE didn't buy it, didn't use it either, but some of them were determined to keep the average up.  Much has transpired since that day, and I am so grateful that the Lord put us together at a time when both of us had concluded that there was no one for us.  He had a better plan.

And Monday, the day after, is 9/11.  I fully expect something awful to be perpetrated that day, as is so often the case.

In a few weeks, beginning on sundown of the 20th, is the Jewish festival of Rosh Hashanah.
At sundown, the 29th, is the Jewish festival of Yom Kippur that lasts until sundown on the following day, the 30th.  Some reading this may recall the Yom Kippur War, back in 1973.
So it may be an "interesting" month.

Our reading in the Old Testament is Proverbs 13 and 14.

Proverbs 13

Proverbs 14
