Today's Readings and Stuff -- Thursday, 26 July 2018 but with Wednesday as well

Another discombobulated (is that a real word?) week.  I'm fraying at the edges, and it is beginning to show.  So, my apologies.  There was an old saying that went something like "I'm spread as thin as the butter on a boarding house sandwich". Been one of those periods in which that saying makes sense.  Oh, well.
Yesterday began VERY early and ended pretty late, with little pause in between.  The alarm went off at around 05:20.  Had to be next door at Niece's place early:  her husband has to be at work absolutely no later than 07:00 and it is a bit of a drive into an industrial area.  Complicated by them setting up for one of those Catholic church festivals to be held starting today (or tomorrow) and run through the weekend.  Niece works in a retail establishment, is listed as a part-time manager, and yesterday was her day to "open" the store, meaning be there first, unlock doors, load the registers, put the outside signage up, etc,, so she had to be there by 07:00, but only about a 15 -- 20 minute drive (unless the nitwits at PENNDOT screw things up in yet a newer and more interesting fashion).  So we were there early at the next door.  And waited for the kids, a 5-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy, to wake  Day before, the 1-year-old had been up at 04:00.  Yesterday, he slept until around 11:00.  The girl got up around 09:00, by which time I'd already been sent off on an errand and made it back.  Little boy is All Boy, and quite active and into stuff.  So it was less than restful.  They kept us busy until Niece got home around 4:30.  Husband was scheduled to be off at 3 p.m., but was held over until after 6 p.m., and then had to make a stop along the way, so he wasn't back until nearly 8 p.m.  Niece had the kids by then.
Wife had received her Disability check yesterday morning, so some bills got paid, and then off to the Store.   Usually, I do those errands myself:  the latest addition to her maladies seems to be a torn meniscus in the one knee, so just straightening the knee is an agony, but she wanted to walk a bit.  So we did.  Got some needed stuff, came home.  Made something to eat, washed some dishes, collapsed into bed around 11:15.
So this didn't get written or anything.  My apologies.

Slept until Littlest Cat had intent to be an alarm clock at 04:55, which yielded her a polite eviction from the bedroom, and I slept until 06:00 or so,  Just trying to catch up on some things this morning.  The success of that attempt is yet to be seen.

We are  were tentatively scheduled to make a Sad Run this afternoon.  Wife has an old friend whose sister died Monday, and they're having calling hours today about 10 miles from here.  No religious services planned, it's that kind of an area and, sadly, that kind of a family and culture, and they're doing a private cremation so no graveside gathering.  As of this very minute, it's not certain we will go, Wife can barely walk at all and is in great pain.  And, just seconds ago, she told me that we're staying home.  OK.
It is saddening.  When my mother died, I was living a long, long way off.  I had a salesman in my office for a very first meeting (I'd been at that company only a couple of months) when I got the call.  He looked at my face quietly, and then said,  "that's OK,  you'll see her again".  Yes, he was that perceptive.  And yet, in this area, while I hear some people voicing similar sentiments, I know very well that many of those mentioned did not know the Lord at all, and we will not see them in Heaven.  Passing on the message, giving an account for the hope that lies within us, is our job.  Evidently,we're not doing it very well.  That awareness sits heavy.

But we shall persevere.

The Old Testament reading takes us through chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6 of Ezra.  As a reminder, this is the effort to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem and to re-establish the proper worship of the Lord after a 70-year exile in Babylon, known as the Captivity.  It was anything but an easy assignment.  BUT ..  they knew that what they were doing was the Lord's specific will and that He would enable it.  That is worth a lot.  A LOT.

Ezra 3

1And when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem.

2Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.Jeshua: also called, JoshuaZerubbabel: Gr. 3And they set the altar upon his bases; for fear was upon them because of the people of those countries: and they offered burnt offerings thereon unto the Lord, even burnt offerings morning and evening.

13So that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people: for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off.

Ezra 4

1Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;the children…: Heb. the sons of the transportation

2Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar–haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.

5And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Ezra 5

1Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them.

2Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

3At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar–bozenai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?

4Then said we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building?make: Chaldee, build

5But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.

6The copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar–bozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites, which were on this side the river, sent unto Darius the king:

7They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace.wherein: Chaldee, in the midst whereof

Ezra 6

Psalm 128

A Song of degrees.

1Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways.

I woke with some lines from a song I've sung, taken from this passage,  "For then is Christ risen from the dead".  I can hear it in my mind, but I could not find the song!  Most frustrating!  But that is Good News.

1st Corinthians 15

1Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
