Today's Readings and Stuff -- Friday, 10 August 2018

Happy Friday to all.

Several nominees for "song  of the day".
One goes with some stuff that's been in mind for weeks and months now.  In The Presence Of Jehovah.  Isn't that desire, that earnest need, what should be a big part of us?  Shouldn't we want to be in His  presence, now and forever?

Today is Friday.  Tomorrow, the Friday night "body count" will reflect sorrow in many homes.  This is not A Good Thing.  I've been watching it at various distances for too many years.

Some very different readings today.  Right from the start.
The book of Job is thought by some theologians to have been the very first book of the Bible to have been written down, preceding the time of Moses.  (The books of Moses go back to the Creation, but Moses wasn't around then, nor was Abraham or many others.  "Written", I said.).  I certainly don't know.  But a good bit of the theme is both timeless and universal, as it gets into the question that probably all of us have asked a time or two (or 308 times).  The old "why do bad things happen to good people?", which sometimes means "why did God let this happen to me??".    I've been there several times.  So have you. 
And, as ever, there will be those around us, standing in judgment who will believe, and sometimes say, "you had it coming because .......".  Now, yes, sometimes, the reason for problems is that we are stupid and make bad decisions.  Been there as well.
But, as the text makes clear, that wasn't the case with Job.  Yet catastrophe overtook him.  Why????
And, sometimes, there is no real answer.  Yet despite it all, as we shall see, the Lord never turned away from Job.  Ever.  That can be a comfort to us, in the midst of everything.
Now, the text refers to him as living in "Uz".  That location is not terribly well defined, but seems to be located near where the land later known as Edom was.  There's a sort of map here.

Oh, and it gives another nominee for "song of the day", a somewhat popular one from many years ago, but I enjoyed it then and now.  Theologically, no, not the best.  But I enjoy it.  The Song of Job.
Gets the message across, which is worth something.

Job 1

1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

2And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

3His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.substance: or, cattlehousehold: or, husbandrymen: Heb. sons

4And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

5And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Job 2

1Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.

2And the Lord said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

3And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.to destroy…: Heb. to swallow him up

4And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

5But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

6And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.but: or, only

7So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

8And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.

9Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

10But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

11Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

12And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.

13So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

Today, Psalm 139, which is a  personal favorite, one that stuck with me from my youth through some Dark Years.  I don't quite have it memorized, but it's one that sticks with me.
It's a good prayer, among other things, which is one of the functions of the Psalms, as well as of our hymns.

Psalm 139

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

1O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me.

2Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

3Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.compassest: or, winnowest

4For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.

5Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

7Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

8If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

9If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

2nd Corinthians 10

1Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:

2But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.

3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

6And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

7Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.

8For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:

9That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.

10For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.

11Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.

12For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

13But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.

14For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:

15Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,

16To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.

17But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

18For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
