Today's Readings and Stuff -- Wednesday, 10 August 2017

The middle of the "work week" has arrived.  I never got into all that "hump day" stuff.  In part, that's because I often worked several jobs, and worked seven days a week quite often.  In part because I quite often didn't know how many days I would be working.  And, frankly, in part, just because I was never amused by all the "funny" videos of camels and dromedaries wandering about.  Perhaps I just lack the "normal" sense of humor.  Whatever.  But Wednesday does mark another day.  A mile marker, if nothing else.  I need something better than that, but lately haven't had many of them.  Wednesday is the day I collect the trash around the house and stick it in the can outside, and then in the evening put it out to the road for pickup Thursday morning.  Not exactly the stuff of memoirs and diaries and great literature, certainly.
But even when I was back in the work world that I lived in for about 45 years, I often didn't have stuff much more memorable to recount.  Interesting on a day-to-day basis, and technically challenging and useful, but pretty forgettable a few years later, or less.  Several of the places that I worked at, going back to around 1968, are no longer there.  Most , in fact.
Operations that employed, in total, thousands and thousands of some pretty good people.  All gone to the winds now.  Operations that demanded -- and received -- some energetic support and hard work, often WELL beyond the "normal" work week and "normal" work hours.And all of it gone like leaves in the autumn.  Gone. For what?

Those of a poetic nature wouldd do well to consider the poem "Ozymandias".  But I remember a few lines from a poem, a distant memory from my childhood or teen years.

Only one life will soon be past,
Only what's done for Christ will last.

True.  Very.  Took me far too long to realize it.
Oh, and  that's part of a larger work:

And from my mind would not depart;

It is an awful thing to realize that so much of where our -- my -- attention has been placed, is on things that, in the end, don't really matter.   May God forgive me.

Our reading in the Old Testament for the day is Psalms 85, 86, and 87
David is the author of Psalm 86, while 85 and 87 are said to be from the sons of Korah.  (and by sons, we mean the descendants of Korah, quite a few generations later, in fact, in this case contemporary with David).

Psalm 85
1 Lord, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob. 2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah. 3 Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger. 4 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease. 5 Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations? 6 Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? 7 Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation. 8 I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly. 9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land. 10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. 11 Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven. 12 Yea, the LORD shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase. 13 Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.


Psalm 86

Psalm 87
1 His foundation is in the holy mountains. 2 The LORD loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. 3 Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah. 4 I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to them that know me: behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there. 5 And of Zion it shall be said, This and that man was born in her: and the highest himself shall establish her. 6 The LORD shall count, when he writeth up the people, that this man was born there. Selah. 7 As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee.

Our reading today in the New Testament is chapter 9 in the Epistle to the Romans.

Romans 9
1 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, 2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. 3 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: 4 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; 5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. 6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For who hath resisted his will? 20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? 21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? 22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: 23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, 24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? 25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. 26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. 27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: 28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. 29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha. 30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. 31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. 32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; 33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
